Infrastructure challenges, climate impacts and policy gaps threaten California’s ability to achieve decarbonization by 2045. Learn how our friends at Edison International are working to meet the state’s net-zero GHG emissions goals, a commitment shared by much of the world, in their new paper “Reaching Net Zero.” https://ow.ly/Zx2j50TIk5n

We have partnered with the team at Brown and Caldwell and ICLEI LOCAL GOVTS FOR SUSTAINABILITY USA to help establish the first Greenhouse Gase Emissions Data Utility (GHG EDU) to collect, share, and enable synthesis of GHG Emissions data from Water Sector sources for credible GHG emissions accounting and reporting and high process-specificity emission factors and methodologies. A project proudly funded by The Water Research Foundation. After speaking with those working in the water sector, managers in the water, wastewater, reuse water, and stormwater must have access to more accurate sets of emission factors to accurately report their greenhouse gas emissions related to their water operations. It is up to us to enhance and improve what the IPCC has laid the foundation for. We are excited to work with John Willis, Harry Zhang, Embrey Bronstad, Z. Jason Ren , US Water Alliance, and the rest of the team on developing a comprehensive GHG emissions library to assist those reporting emissions from water sources. Let’s tackle the challenges exasperated by climate change on the water-energy nexus by collaborating to develop innovative solutions --------------------------------- #WENRegistry #WaterEnergyNexus #WaterEnergyNexusRegistry #SustainableCalifornia #ClimateAction #GHGEmissions #GreenhouseGases #WaterManagement #DecentralizedSystems #Resilience #ClimateRiskAssessment

Flooding from Hurricane Helene and other extreme hurricanes and rainstorms reduces the reliability of water treatment facilities and the availability of electricity to pump stations. Energy is required to pump and distribute water for human use and to treat wastewater for safe disposal back into the environment. When these systems break down, the consequences are immediate and severe. The #WENRegistry offers the opportunity to manage and address the urgency of the water-energy nexus in an integrated and proactive manner. We cannot continue to tackle and approach the impacts of natural disasters as we have in the past. It is time for an integrated approach to address the challenges and opportunities of the water-energy nexus. Population growth in regions experiencing frequent extreme weather events strains energy and water infrastructure. Some extreme weather events include forest fires, hurricanes, droughts, heat waves, floods, and storms. The frequency and intensity of these events can be attributed to human-caused climate change, like Hurricane Helene which rapidly intensified from a weak tropical storm to a major Category 4. Climate change is already affecting rainfall and temperature patterns across North America. We have a short window of opportunity to act. That time is now. What we do today and before 2030 will determine the kind of environment we leave for future generations. Let’s tackle the challenges exasperated by climate change on the water-energy nexus by collaborating to develop innovative solutions for harnessing: --Water efficiency of energy production, electricity generation, and end-use systems --Energy efficiency of water and wastewater management and systems --Reliability and resilience of energy and water systems --Use of nontraditional water sources in a safe and productive manner --Responsible energy operations concerning water quality and ecosystem services --Productive synergies among water and energy systems #WENRegistry #WaterEnergyNexus #WaterEnergyNexusRegistry #SustainableCalifornia #ClimateAction #GHGEmissions

The Climate Registry's California Climate Leadership Forum was an inspiring and impactful event during #ClimateWeekNYC! Leaders from across industries gathered at The Westin NYC for an afternoon filled with insightful discussions, groundbreaking ideas, and meaningful connections focused on advancing California's ambitious climate goals. Topics included best practices for developing and regulating carbon disclosure mechanisms, decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors, corporate accountability, clean energy, and the importance of quality data and transparency in GHG reporting. Key Highlights: - In-conversation with CA Attorney General Rob Bonta: A fireside chat with TCR's Amy Holm, where AG Bonta spotlighted the state’s groundbreaking lawsuit against ExxonMobil for misleading the public on plastic recycling for decades, emphasizing how this case could reshape corporate accountability and combat plastics pollution. The conversation underscored California’s commitment to holding polluters accountable while protecting vulnerable communities. - 2024 Climate Pioneer Award: We were thrilled to honor former National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy with the 2024 Climate Pioneer Award, recognizing her tireless dedication to advancing climate policies that protect both people and the planet. - Corporate Carbon Disclosure Panel: In collaboration with EcoEngineers, TCR launched a guide on developing and implementing effective carbon disclosure legislation. The findings were presented by a panel moderated by Reuven Carlyle, Founder and EVP of Earth Finance, Inc. and featuring Senators Henry Stern and Scott Wiener; Laith Amin, Vice President of EcoEngineers; and Liane Randolph, Chair, California Air Resources Board. Other speakers included: Ben Allen, CA State Senator Josh Becker, CA State Senator Catherine Blakespear, CA State Senator Jared Blumenfeld, President, Waverley Street Foundation Caroline Choi, SVP of Corporate Affairs and Public Policy, Southern California Edison (SCE) Damon Connolly, CA State Assemblymember Lena A.
