The concept of planetary boundaries offers a framework — or "an accounting system"— for the Earth’s stability as Johan Rockström, director of the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Institute for Climate Impact Research, explained to Amit Bouri, CEO and co-founder of the GIIN, during their recorded conversation for last week’s GIIN Impact Forum. Professor Rockström discussed how the nine planetary boundaries can help us "navigate ourselves towards a safe landing, even if we only focus on climate." Amit then spoke with Marilia Bezerra, chief programmes officer at the IKEA Foundation, about why the foundation prioritizes funding planetary boundaries research and the need to rethink our relationship to risk to nurture the future we want. 📽 Watch Professor Rockström's conversation with Amit here: https://lnkd.in/exYuMquw

$1.571 trillion USD is the latest estimated size of the impact investing market, according to research published today by the GIIN. Read the full report with additional insights on the drivers of this growth here: https://lnkd.in/e22YGQME This estimate represents 21% compound annual growth (CAGR) of the total impact investing market since 2019, signaling growing mainstream acceptance of impact investing, alongside a big uptick in capital dedicated to impact. The fact that this growth has occurred despite – or perhaps as a result of – international unrest and uncertainty, indicates that investors see impact investing as a way to solve the world’s problems while also resulting in financial returns. Read the report for the latest findings on what the GIIN estimates to be over 3,907 organizations investing for impact. Here are a few of the key insights from the research: 📈 Across a subset of 1,593 organizations, excluding outliers, the average investment portfolio holds $986 million USD in impact AUM, while the median investment portfolio holds $42 million USD. 🌍 This year, over half (59%) of organizations whose impact data is measured were repeats from the GIIN’s 2022 market sizing exercise. The mix of new and repeat organizations in 2024 indicates the entry of new players in the impact investing field, alongside steady growth in the impact assets of existing funds. 💼 An analysis of market size data shows that larger investors are fueling the growth in the supply of impact capital. The GIIN sees a growing number of institutional asset owners (IAOs) striving to generate positive real-world outcomes that serve their beneficiaries while also meeting financial obligations, with 91% of surveyed IAOs leveraging private equity to align business practices with impact priorities through active ownership and long-term value creation. Read the GIIN’s latest report, Pursuing Impact Within a Portfolio: Insights From Institutional Asset Owners, to explore how institutional asset owners are adopting a theory of change to define priorities, identify opportunities across portfolios and align investments to achieve both financial and impact goals at https://lnkd.in/epx9Pzh9 Based on interviews with actual institutional asset owners, this report has actionable insights to help other institutional investors visualize a path to integrate impact thinking into the management of their portfolios: 🔍 Applying an impact lens: Implementing a theory of change ensures that institutional asset owners systematically consider how investments can align with impact priorities across asset classes, providing thoughtful integration into portfolio strategies. Impact investments can align fully with institutional risk-return profiles, demonstrating that no trade-offs are needed to achieve financial goals. 💼 Broader beneficiary needs: An impact lens identifies investments that not only meet financial obligations but also address the world that beneficiaries live in — ensuring long-term value beyond financial returns. 📊 Case studies: The report highlights four institutional asset owners from the U.K., Europe and the U.S. — South Yorkshire Pensions Authority, PGGM, Zurich Insurance Group and MassMutual — each of which has a distinct approach to impact investing. These real-world examples show how defining impact priorities and systematically identifying investment opportunities across asset classes deliver both financial and social outcomes. 💡 Integrated strategies: While creating a dedicated impact portfolio offers a convenient starting point for some investors, a more holistic impact lens unlocks greater capital allocation across asset classes. This diversification not only enhances financial performance but also maximizes impact, ensuring investments support both long-term financial resilience and meaningful outcomes for beneficiaries. Let us know in the comments what stood out to you as you explore our research, and stay tuned for more market analytics from the GIIN, including the Size of the Market 2024, which will launch later in October. https://lnkd.in/epx9Pzh9 #ImpactInvesting #InstitutionalAssetOwners #SocialImpact #SDGs
