Earlier this month, we spent an inspiring day at the Matt's Place Foundation Innovation and Design Showcase, where Brian Court, FAIA, presented our plans for Matt’s Place 3.0—a three-story, nine-unit apartment building for patients and families navigating the challenges of an ALS diagnosis. It was wonderful to be part of a community driving change and fostering innovative solutions for pressing issues around sustainability, modular construction, architecture, accessibility, technology, and healthcare needs for families and businesses alike. Thank you to all who came out to support!

The Maritime Innovation Center at Fishermen’s Terminal received a Green Architecture award in the 2024 Green GOOD DESIGN Sustainability Awards. Hosted by The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum International Museum, the program recognizes the world’s most important examples of sustainable design. Navigating toward a Living Future, The Maritime Innovation Center will be a prominent piece of the reimagined Fishermen’s Terminal, the longtime hub of Seattle’s storied commercial fishing community. At 14,000 square feet, the Center will emerge from a Living Building Challenge-compliant renovation/adaptive reuse of the circa 1914 Seattle Ship Supply Building. It is an honor to be recognized. This weekend, get a sneak peek at the custom artwork that will soon grace the walls of our Hotel Westland project at RailSpur Seattle. Over the past three months, Urban Villages, in collaboration with ARTXIV, hosted a pop-up art studio at RailSpur’s 419 Occidental Ave building, resulting in 328 PNW-inspired works from over 30 artists. Catch a first look at the collection during an exhibition at RailSpur from July 26-29 or view selected pieces at the Seattle Art Fair from July 25-28. We hope to see you there! The Seattle DJC recently covered the event and project. Click the link to learn more: https://lnkd.in/ghC-Rw3M.
Our adaptive reuse project, RailSpur, breathes new life into Seattle's oldest neighborhood, Pioneer Square—once a haven for independent bookshops and art galleries. Committed to maintaining this area as a vibrant hub for creatives and the broader community, we have hosted various interactive art and music events over the past few years, including the now infamous Forest For the Trees, an annual multi-day art extravaganza and block party. This year, in collaboration with ARTXIV, we launched a pop-up art studio in RailSpur's 419 Occidental Ave building—a sprawling 10,000+ sq. ft space that has served as a creative incubator for over 30 artists in the past three months. The results? 328 thought-provoking works that will grace the walls of Hotel Westland, opening in RailSpur in spring 2025. We invite the public to catch an exclusive first glimpse of this collection during an exhibition at RailSpur from July 26-29. Additionally, selected pieces will be showcased at a Hotel Westland booth at the Seattle Art Fair from July 25-28, 2024. 📷: ARTXIV

We want to thank the AIA Seattle Mass Timber Committee and The Miller Hull Partnership, LLP for coordinating Saturday’s Mass Timber Newhouse Building Tour. The Newhouse Building isn’t an ordinary project. It’s part of the legislative campus modernization, but while it’s being modernized, a critical component of the project is maintaining the campus’ neo-classical architectural style and honoring the strength and spirit of Washington State. One of the project team’s shared values is sustainability, and we collectively set out to make this project as sustainable as possible by salvaging most of the materials from deconstruction and using locally sourced lumber and dowel-laminated timber (DLT). Because Newhouse is a taxpayer funded project, utilizing local wood products was also a specification requirement. Miller Hull designed Newhouse for net-zero readiness at the current LEED Silver level. We anticipate substantial completion of construction will be November 15 and the first Senate meeting in the new building is scheduled for December 11. We can’t wait to show you final pictures, but in the meantime here’s a sneak preview from Saturday’s tour. Cascadia Daily News recently wrote about our work with Western Washington University to develop a pre-design for a new academic building on the Olympic College Poulsbo campus. The project will address the educational and economic needs of the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas and make meaningful progress towards the State’s goal that at least 70 percent of Washington adults, ages 25-44, attain a postsecondary credential. “‘The Olympic region is one of the most underserved areas of the state when it comes to higher education access,’ [Western’s Chief of Staff Becca Kenna-Schenk] said. ‘If you live, say in Port Angeles, the closest four-year institution prior to Western’s presence would have been to go down to Seattle.’” Click the link to learn more: https://bit.ly/4cOsp5l.

Join AIA Seattle this month for a Mass Timber tour of our Newhouse Building Replacement. Constructed in 1934, the original building faced life-safety and seismic issues that required its replacement. Our design integrates the neo-classical style of the campus while incorporating elements specific to the Washington state region and resource stewardship, using state-sourced materials like mass timber to support an ecological footprint. The hybrid part-steel part-timber design features dowl-laminated timber (DLT), a product where acoustic materials are embedded into the wood, resulting in neat wooden strips threaded over one another. Miller Hull Architect Nick Clesi, AIA, and Japneet Pahwa will lead the tour with co-leaders from Lund Opsahl and Hoffman Construction Company. The tour takes place on July 20th and will begin at the Newhouse Building in Olympia before making its way to Milgard Hall at UW Tacoma. "What do you think?” Dave would always ask. "I don’t know… let’s try it,” Bob would respond. Ever since the beginning, critical feedback has always been crucial to the work we do. Perhaps it’s because we were founded by Bob and David Miller, FAIA, two best friends whose admiration and respect for one another created a culture of not only an openness to input but an eagerness for it. In our latest Perspectives piece, we explore a cornerstone of our identity and culture that has advanced our projects in ways that would have otherwise been impossible.
