Today, we share the story of Mio Nakayama, our Team Lead, Talent Operations Partner based in Tokyo, Japan. Mio’s experience of coming out while living abroad highlights the universal importance of acceptance and love. ❤️ "When I first came out at the age of 17, I was living abroad with my host family in Ireland. One evening, while sharing high school relationship stories with my host sister Sophie and her friends, I shared with her that I like girls. Since she and her friends had gay friends, and Sophie’s cousin was gay as well, they were not surprised at all. A few days later, my host mother approached me and let me know that Sophie shared my story with her and she knew I was gay. She assured me that it was perfectly okay to be myself. Hearing those words brought me the confidence to truly be me from that day forward. I have never officially come out to my own family, because I think they know 😆 I have been with my partner for 15 years and we live together. My family treats my partner like family and they always tell me, as long as I’m happy, they are happy. 🩷 Japan has made some progress in LGBTQ+ rights and awareness in recent years, but it still lags behind some other developed countries. I hope to continue to raise community awareness! I’m proud to be who I am. Meet Michael Yorker, our Global Facilities Manager based in Mountain View, California. Michael’s journey of coming out and finding a supportive community is a testament to the resilience and strength of the LGBTQ+ community. 🌈 "I grew up in Turlock, California, where I came out at 18 in 1990 to my conservative parents. Like many in the LGBTQ+ community, I had to move out that day and didn’t speak with my family for many years. Seeking a supportive community where I could be myself, I moved to San Francisco, where I quickly found my new family. In the early 90s, I was an active member of ActUp and Queer Nation, and I continue to support organizations like the Trevor Project, Human Rights Campaign Fund, and SF AIDS Walk. I'm also an advocate for the Trevor Project's 'It Gets Better' campaign, believing in the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ youth and promoting a message of hope and resilience.
