We train farmers in agroforestry to build vibrant regional economies, thriving food systems, and a healthier planet.
About us
Around the world, modern and industrialized farming practices are destroying the environment—and, at the same time, failing to provide reliable income and nourishment for the farmers we all depend on to survive. At TREES, we recognize that unsustainable land use is the root cause of our most pressing challenges. We confront these challenges by serving the people at the heart of our global food systems: farmers and their families. As a global leader in agroforestry training for over 30 years, TREES provides hands-on, immersive education, skill building, and support, encouraging farmers to work with nature, not against it. Our signature methodology, the Forest Garden Approach, helps farmers transform their land with thousands of fast-growing, ecologically appropriate trees and dozens of other crops, creating new possibilities for themselves and their communities. By embracing sustainable land practices, farmers are reclaiming their agency, breaking the cycles of climate change and generational poverty, and rebuilding our food systems from the ground up.

#MeetTheTeam Mohamed Traore, our West Africa Regional Director 🌍 Mohamed brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Trees for the Future, combining over two decades of expertise in agroecology and environmental management. An Agricultural Engineer by training, Mohamed earned his degree from the Polytechnic Rural Institute in 1998. His passion for sustainable farming and environmental protection took root early, as he spent seven years leading agroecology efforts for a national NGO focused on environmental conservation. 👉 In his pursuit of deeper understanding, Mohamed furthered his education with a Master's degree in Environmental Management in Egypt. From 2010 to 2015, he worked with Planète Urgence, a French NGO, where he managed Environment and Development projects, ultimately becoming Head of Mission in Mali. Since joining Trees for the Future in 2015, Mohamed has been instrumental in driving sustainable farming practices across West Africa, empowering farmers to restore their land and their livelihoods. Mohamed’s leadership and vision continue to shape the future of reforestation and regenerative agriculture across the Mali and Senegal. Our team makes our work possible and we are grateful to have people like Mohamed #BehindTheMission! 🌱

Like many Ugandan farmers, Harriet is growing coffee on her farm. 🌱 Coffee is a commonly grown commodity crop in Harriet’s home region of Mount Elgon and across the country. The globally beloved caffeine-packed berries support the Ugandan economy as a leading export. But after decades of growing coffee on the steep slopes of Uganda’s mountainous farmlands, soils are disappearing and mudslides are becoming common occurrences due to climate change and harmful farming practices. In addition to the stress on their land, farmers who use their entire property to grow only one crop have only one stream of revenue and are susceptible to changes in the market. Thanks to your support Trees for the Future (TREES) can train farmers in a regenerative agroforestry technique called the Forest Garden Approach. Farmers learn to protect and nourish their land with trees and climate-smart practices. Then they diversify what they grow to ensure they have plenty to eat and sell all year long. Isn't that amazing? Learn more about Harriet's story here: https://bit.ly/TREES-blog #TreesForTheFuture #Farming #Sustainability

As Climate Week 2024 comes to a close, we’re inspired by the conversations, connections, and commitments made toward a more sustainable and resilient future. 🌍 This week reaffirmed that true climate action starts from the ground up—literally—with farmers leading the way. Through the Forest Garden Approach, farmers are restoring degraded lands, creating green jobs, and building climate-resilient communities. From transparent carbon credits to green entrepreneurship to food systems and agroforestry, the future of climate solutions is in the hands of local leaders. We look ahead to continuing our mission: partnering with farmers to scale solutions that deliver lasting impact for people and the planet. We must continue to push forward these solutions to create a sustainable and equitable future for all. Together, we can and must keep driving change—one farmer, one tree, one solution at a time. #UNGA78 #ClimateWeekNYC #FarmerLeadership #ForestGardenApproach #NatureBasedSolutions #Agroforestry #GreenJobs #ClimateAction #Sustainability #GlobalImpact

🌍✨ Exciting news! WildMon is teaming up with Catona Climate and Trees for the Future to measure how agroforestry parcels in Kenya benefit local wildlife. We’re using #bioacoustics to monitor biodiversity on-the-ground in the project location and nearby baseline areas to show the project’s effectiveness in supporting wildlife. Check out the featured project page to learn how #WildMon is helping to improve carbon project transparency in Kenya🐾🌳➡️ https://lnkd.in/gpU8dkh6 📸 from Trees for the Future #ecoacoustics #restoration #conservation #biodiversitymonitoring #biodiversity #carbonprojects #wildlifeconservation

Hats off to the graduates! 1,300 Forest Garden farmers graduated in Kenya last week! After four years of training in regenerative agroforestry and the Forest Garden Approach, each of these farmers is now an expert in these techniques and able to protect their land for generations to come. Climate-smart agriculture is a critical piece of climate action. We're proud to work with thousands of farmers across sub-Saharan Africa doing just that. We celebrate our recent graduates and look forward to many, many more in the years to come! Check out the latest in Africa.com - https://bit.ly/3XEKHQ8 #ClimateWeek #ClimateWeekNYC Catona Climate

Bring recognized as a UN World Restoration Flagship is a testament to the transformative power of farmers in restoring ecosystems and addressing climate change at scale. This award amplifies the impact of Forest Garden farmers—leaders who are regenerating degraded lands, boosting food security, and driving resilient, sustainable futures. Farmer-led solutions are at the core of climate action, and this designation highlights the essential role that smallholder farmers play in building climate-resilient communities. Thank you, UNEP, for underscoring the importance of farmer-led solutions in building sustainable futures for both people and the planet. We’re proud to stand alongside many inspiring initiatives working toward a healthier, more resilient world. It’s time for nature-based solutions that work by, for, and in communities—and it’s time for farmers to take center stage in the fight for a healthier, more sustainable world.
