ULTIMO project
Urban Transit Services
Funded under Horizon EU, ULTIMO seeks to deploy the first economically viable, large-scale AV public transport service.
About us
The EU-project ULTIMO seeks to set the foundations and deploy the very first economically viable large scale, on-demand and user-oriented AV public transportation services. By taking a holistic approach to AV deployment that considers all elements in a cross-sector business environment, ULTIMO wants to truly unlock the integration of AVs into cities with on-demand and door-to-door services that will allow for more sustainable, accessible and inclusive mobility. With Deutsche Bahn at the helm, ULTIMO joins 23 partners from eight European countries for a period of four years.

#ICYMI ULTIMO recently held a co-creation workshop in Herford that gathered citizens for their expectations of attractive, safe and inclusive transport. Groups were divided into groups focusing key topics: ✅ What a bus service would have to look like if people were to choose it over their own car. ✅ Safety concerns of autonomous vehicles. ✅ What a service should look like for people with disabilities to easily use. ✅ Mobility chains and the networking of different modes of transport. The key insights of the workshop will be incorporated into planning at the Herford site plus the other ULTIMO sites. Stay tuned for more soon! How to get automated public transport from vision to reality? ULTIMO recently held its second webinar on this very topic, as part of our “The ULTIMO Frontier: Let’s Talk Automated Mobility” series. This second webinar featured lessons learned from some real-world examples: ➡ Four years of automated driving in Monheim, Germany ➡ The UK's £66 million commercialising CAM programme. An interactive slido session also provoked discussion around timeline for automated vehicles in public transport and obstacles to overcome. Speakers took part from DB Regio, the UK government’s Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles, Bahnen der Stadt Monheim GmbH (BSM) and the session was moderated by Bax. Wasn’t able to make it to the live webinar? Check out the recording here: https://lnkd.in/eXP5vRBX Stay tuned for an update about our next webinar in the series soon 📣 CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency #UrbanMobility #AutomatedMobility #ULTIMO_EU

ULTIMO project's 2nd thought-provoking webinar on automated public transport in Europe with Thomas Drewes (Deutsche Bahn), Dr.-Ing. Julian F. Sandiano (Bahnen der Stadt Monheim GmbH) and Michael Talbot (Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles) took place yesterday. Key Insight: There's a big debate about whether EU transport authorities should adopt non-European technologies now or wait for home-grown solutions, even if it means delays. In a Slido poll, 68% of participants stated they wanted to adopt global technologies from countries such as China, the US or else immediately, while 32% preferred to wait for European OEMs to catch up. This isn't just about technology - it's about the strategic position of the EU's public transport in the future of mobility. While leveraging existing technologies would speed up deployment and prevent losing ground to private robot taxi operators (think Tesla), there are legitimate concerns about geopolitical implications and IT security. Thomas drew an analogy to Airbus - a successful European collaboration in aerospace - as a model for automated mobility. We could create a competitive advantage without sacrificing our strategic interests by combining Europe's strong vehicle manufacturing capabilities with advanced self-driving software from global partners. Another survey result: When asked what's holding back the deployment of automated public transport in Europe compared to the US/China, the majority pointed to a lack of targeted investment and a conservative regulatory approach. Public acceptance and trust are no longer seen as significant barriers. My take: Europe is at a crossroads. Embracing global technologies now could accelerate our journey towards automated mobility, but we must also consider building a unified European approach to remain competitive in the long term. Large-scale public-private collaborations could be the key - both within Europe and with global innovators.

The second day of our ULTIMO project visit to Oslo was characterised by knowledge sharing and discussions on our use cases and development topics. Firstly, we visited Ruter As headquarters and took a look at the control centre and the development status of the on-demand app for the demo site. Many thanks to Agata Cypriak vel Czupryniak for the inspiring exchange! Now we are at Transportøkonomisk institutt (Norwegian Centre for Transport Research) Ruter's research partner and also active in the MODI Project with regard to impact assessment. After an interim report by Petr Pokorny on their first insights of the Grorudalen demositr, our scientific director Guy Fournier now presents the dimensions of a sustainable business model for AV in MaaS. Enough input to process the many insights on the journey home. Special thanks to Christian Willoch for the excellent programme and wonderful dinner. And it was a great pleasure to get to know new site manager Johanne Fredslund Dølvik as well as discuss different aspects in detail with Lars Gunnar Lundestad Oslo rocks! #automatedmobility #ccam #publictransport CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency
