We deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa; informed by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063.

About us

Established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958 as one of the UN's five regional commissions, ECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. Made up of 54 member States, and playing a dual role as a regional arm of the UN and as a key component of the African institutional landscape, ECA is well positioned to make unique contributions to address the Continent’s development challenges. ECA’s strength derives from its role as the only UN agency mandated to operate at the regional and subregional levels to harness resources and bring them to bear on Africa's priorities. To enhance its impact, ECA places a special focus on collecting up to date and original regional statistics in order to ground its policy research and advocacy on clear objective evidence; promoting policy consensus; providing meaningful capacity development; and providing advisory services in key thematic fields. ECA also provides technical advisory services to African governments, intergovernmental organizations and institutions. In addition, it formulates and promotes development assistance programmes and acts as the executing agency for relevant operational projects. ECA is headed by an Executive Secretary, who is assisted by two Deputy Executive Secretaries. Its work programme is supported by two pillars: knowledge generation and knowledge delivery. There are five substantive divisions responsible for policy research: Macroeconomic Policy, Regional Integration & Trade, Social Policy Development, Special Initiatives, and the African Centre for Statistics. The Capacity Development Division, IDEP (ECA’s training arm), the Division of Administration and ECA’s Subregional Offices in Rabat, Niamey, Yaounde, Kigali and Lusaka comprise the knowledge delivery pillar.

  • A Young Statistician’s Reflections on Investing in Human Capacity to Drive Sustainable Development Fransina Amutenya is a Senior Statistician at, Namibia Statistics Agency. She has benefitted from the Takwimu Young African Statisticians (TYAS) Programme aimed at developing and empowering young statisticians in Africa. The programme, supported by the Economic Commission for Africa provides a platform for young statisticians to collaborate, innovate, and advance their skills, helping them stay in tune with the global data revolution. She speaks about her statistical experience: 🌍 What do statisticians do and what attracted you to become a statistician? Statisticians design data collection tools to gather information on a certain subject often called the population. They analyze the collected data to write a story or report on the findings. In brief, Statisticians are researchers. How did I become a Statistician? On my first day at university, I intended to register for a Bachelor of Science (Pure science) course. The Faculty officer seated at the registration counter at the time then said, “Hello young girl (I was 17 at the time), there is a new course in our faculty called Bachelor of Science in Population Studies, please consider enrolling for this course instead of pure science” ...As they say – the rest is history, I enrolled, and to this very day, I am forever grateful to Ms. Tekla Tjipura for steering me into this call of a Statistician. 📊 Why are data and statistics important for development and decision-making? Data and statistics are crucial for development and decision-making for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is only through empirical evidence that we can make informed decisions. By analyzing data, policymakers, businesses, and organizations can understand current trends, patterns, and potential future scenarios, enabling them to make decisions that are grounded rather than speculative. Secondly, with statistics, we can identify areas of concern or opportunities for improvement. Policymakers can detect inefficiencies in a process, uncover disparities in access to resources, or recognize emerging market trends. Thirdly, we use data to monitor progress and allocate resources efficiently. In the same vein and probably most importantly, statistics can serve as a basis for accountability and transparency in the decision-making processes. By documenting and sharing data on various aspects of development, decision-makers can be held accountable for their actions and policies. All in all, data and statistics play a fundamental role in guiding development efforts and ensuring that decisions are evidence-based, targeted, and effective. • “The #AfCFTA offers #Zimbabwe an unprecedented opportunity to diversify its trade, build resilient industries, and stimulate economic growth. However, to fully realize these benefits, it is critical that trade is inclusive and environmentally sustainable. Zimbabwe’s agriculture and forestry sectors, particularly the oleaginous plants, seeds and fruits and wood and paper value chains, play a crucial role in driving economic growth and reducing poverty. In this context, UNECA, in collaboration with the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), has implemented a project funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) to identify green value chain opportunities and climate adaptation needs across 19 African countries and 5 regions, including Zimbabwe. The findings will be incorporated into the National AfCFTA Implementation Strategies as Green Supplements, aligning with Zimbabwe’s national priorities and the UN’s efforts to promote sustainable development” Ms Bineswaree Bolaky, Economic Affairs Officer, Subregional Initiatives Section, UNECA Subregional Office for Southern Africa. • “Government of #Zimbabwe has applauded the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) for providing technical assistance towards the development of the Green Supplement, which will be part of the national AfCFTA Implementation Strategy for Zimbabwe, once it has been developed. Today’s workshop aligns seamlessly with our goals of sustainable development of these critical value chains. The Government remains committed to promoting sustainable and inclusive growth of its economy to the benefit of the citizenry. We advocate for environmentally friendly production practices and are actively encouraging the adoption of climate-smart technologies in industries” says Mr Dayford Ndhema, Director Harare Metropolitan Province, Ministry of Industry and Commerce. The workshop is organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (Africa Trade Policy Centre - ATPC and the Subregional Office for Southern Africa- (SROSA), under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) of the Republic of Zimbabwe and with funding from Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). The study focuses on opportunities and challenges to develop green value-chains in oleaginous plants, seeds and fruits value chain, as well as the wood and paper value chain in Zimbabwe and will complement the National AfCFTA Strategy of Zimbabwe that was developed by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce (MIC) with support from UNECA and the European Union. The main objectives of the validation workshop are: 1. To present and discuss the draft Green Supplement to the Strategy for the implementation of the AfCFTA Agreement in Zimbabwe.  2. Serve as a platform to stimulate discussions on the draft strategy to elicit feedback and inputs from a broad range of stakeholders in Zimbabwe 3. Ensure complementarities across the National AfCFTA Strategy, and other strategic policy documents of Zimbabwe. The aim of the Green Supplement is to provide strategies and actions for developing green value chains for exports to African markets. To promote long-term competitiveness and sustainability of these value chains, the Green Supplement strategy and action plan also contain measures to foster climate adaptation and promote green growth transitions in line with national development priorities.
