Through a series of case studies developed in NetZeroCitiesEU, discover how cities are using co creation to engage their citizens in their climate neutrality processes: 1. Espoon kaupunki - Esbo stad - City of Espoo has developed a co creation toolkit designed to improve cooperation in urban development as cities cannot meet the sustainability challenge alone. This toolkit can be replicated in any regional development project! 2. Barcelona City Council created a Citizens' Assembly consisting of 100 citizens selected by lottery to directly participate in defining needs and solutions for the city and its climate actions. 3. City of Dubrovnik / Grad Dubrovnik developed a project for Local Voices in Resource Allocation which enables residents to take part in participatory budgeting, directly influence the allocation of public funds to community projects, enhancing civic participation, improving local infrastructure, and creating a sense of citizen ownership. ✍ Want to know more about these projects? 🌍 How are cities adapting to climate change through spatial planning? Local and regional governments are at the forefront of climate action, with ambitious energy and climate plans. But without the legal capacity to enforce measures, implementation remains a challenge. Spatial planning can help bridge this gap by embedding climate and energy considerations directly into urban development strategies. 🔎 Take Karlovac, Croatia. The city has revised its spatial plan to tackle climate challenges head-on. A key move? Banning fossil fuel heating in major redevelopment zone—new buildings must connect to the city's district heating system or rely on renewables. The plan also prioritises green infrastructure, with green roofs and rainwater retention to reduce flooding and boost resilience. 👉 The principles demonstrated by Karlovac's spatial plan highlight the potential for other cities and regions to adopt similar approaches.
