We're seeing the demand side of the market for carbon credits split into three discrete groups — each with their own challenges when they go through their procurement process: 1. New to market buyers who need a guide to integrating carbon credits into a broader sustainability strategy. 2. Repeat buyers who are leading the way on carbon removal and avoidance, but are limited by team size, budget, and expertise when it comes to the scale of the actions the can take. 3. Market experts who are buying large amounts of credits to execute on a sophisticated strategy, but need infrastructure to scale up their approach or meet their procurement goals. This year at #ClimateWeekNYC, our own Jan Mertens spoke at Puro.earth's panel on carbon dioxide removal about how Patch is trying to meet each of these three groups where they're at to help them overcome their obstacles. That's how we're working to rapidly grow the overall size of the market. And the good news is we're already seeing huge progress here, and the focus on the voluntary carbon market at Climate Week this year is more of a reflection of this progress than a precursor to it — the trend toward a healthy, high-integrity market will continue. What are your takeaways from Climate Week?

If there's one takeaway from VCM day at #ClimateWeekNYC, it's that the voluntary carbon market is inevitable. That was one of the themes of the closing plenary that featured speakers from The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), VCMI, Global Carbon Market Utility, and Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) & Vulnerable Twenty Group (V20), as well as our CEO, Brennan Spellacy. Despite mixed public opinion that chilled the market, growing demand for high-integrity carbon credits — including from the US federal government — has been undeniable. Now is the time for corporate sustainability leaders to hit the accelerator. The investments private companies make today will create the gigatonne-scale carbon removal and avoidance solutions of tomorrow. A robust carbon credit strategy will be a core part of every credible climate program. But the ones who take the first step today will have a head start on the market, and they'll also have a much greater impact on ultimately rebalancing the planet.

This is what climate solutions look like. At #ClimateWeekNYC, Patch hosted a site visit at the Gotham Ready Mix facility in Brooklyn, where CarbonCure Technologies is working to durably sequester CO₂ in concrete. By scaling this technology today, our world could one day capture and store more carbon in concrete than we emit producing it. Are you in New York for Climate Week? We know it's going to take trillions of climate finance every year to reverse course on the crisis. So, what's the theory of change on how we get from where we are now to where we need to be? Together with VCMI and The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM), we sat down during #ClimateWeekNYC to dig deep into our theory of change: accelerating meaningful demand signals today so the solutions of tomorrow can scale up. We can give corporate climate leaders clear playbooks to participate in carbon markets and then communicate back to their customers, investors, and competitors the real-world impact and community value their purchases are creating. That's how we can help scale up climate finance faster. Check out our other events during Climate Week in New York: https://lnkd.in/gz2beg98

Global Corporate Affairs + Policy at Patch | Board Director | Advisor | Weekly Carbon Markets and Climate Policy Insights every Monday

End of day 1 here in NYC for Climate Week! 😅 Thanks to Yusuf Khan for including my views in his piece in the The Wall Street Journal. With over 100,000 people attending this year and more than 900 events (2x the number from last year), no wonder this feels like THE place to be to talk climate action. As I say in the article, the climate community seems to be choosing New York over Baku this year for very practical and pragmatic reasons. Feeling energized for the week ahead. My weekly post on carbon markets and climate policy will return next Monday! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gbBkGM_h #NYCW #ClimateWeekNYC #ClimateWeek

Climate Integrity Lead at Patch | Scaling Climate Solutions

🚨 Patch has updated our project acceptance criteria! 🚨 We're constantly hearing about how much and how fast the VCM's integrity landscape is changing. Overall this is great, because it reflects how market standards and science are improving. But the integrity landscape is also trending toward complexity, which can make it confusing for buyers and project developers to orient around what a good credit actually looks like. One thing we're proud of with our trust and safety approach is that it's both responsive to these changes, but also offers everyone transparency, simplicity, and consistency. We're able to do that by creating acceptance criteria at the project type level. In this blog I've broken down the updates we've made, the thinking behind them, and how this framework accounts for attributes like additionality at the project type level. Take a look — and let me know your thoughts in the comments! https://lnkd.in/g_jQQyqc
