⏩⏩ A new study from our friends at Sounds Profitable suggests that ad skipping during podcasts is not as common as some listeners say. In fact, when asked about the latest episode they listened to, 68% of listeners surveyed heard all or some of the ads within; only 17% actually skipped them all. Though some listeners anecdotally claim to skip ads, the research doesn’t necessarily bear that out, according to Tom Webster. “When you ground them in a familiar instance, with a podcast that they liked or just listened to, what you'll see is that most people pay attention to most of the ads.” How can your brand up the chances of an audience engaging with their ads? The four Cs we took away from last week’s Podcast Movement Evolutions: 1️⃣ Counting accurately. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the iOS17 update to the Podcasts app is a good thing for our industry. It gives us a much more accurate read of how many listeners are actively engaging with each podcast episode, allowing for better-informed media strategies and more transparency all around. A perceived drop in download numbers doesn’t faze us—we’re focused on results. 2️⃣ Creating content is back and more creative than ever. There’s a palpable excitement in the air around unique, creative executions outside of a traditional 60-second host-read ad. We’re talking more effort into each execution, more of a willingness to be creative, and more commitment to deepening client-influencer relationships. On that note… 3️⃣ Curating intentional partnerships. Networks are prioritizing quality over quantity. We will continue to work closely with networks who are deeply familiar with their roster of talent and the audiences with whom they resonate, and in turn, pass on those thoughtful recommendations to our clients. 4️⃣ Coming back stronger. 2023 was an interesting, and often challenging, year that saw less new content and less spend than expected. This year, we are seeing renewed energy around new content and new client business, as well as a continued dedication to growing the ecosystem at large. *️⃣ Bonus C: Connecting! Back and, dare we say, better than ever? As we reflect on an amazing weekend at #SXSW, here are some takeaways from the event. Its presence at SXSW confirms it: Podcasting is now as mainstream as “mainstream” gets. We’re used to connecting with peers at industry-specific events, but to be among so many different tech and culture experts in their respective fields, and be able to learn from and celebrate each other in one place, was so refreshing! Creators had a significant presence at SXSW, touting the unique attributes of Podcasting we’ve been espousing to our clients for years: 🤝 The ability to align themselves with brands that resonate with their audience 🪞 The importance of maintaining authenticity and focus 💪 The amount of time and effort that goes into producing high-quality integrations 🌟 The opportunity to showcase their whole, multifaceted identity Another finger-on-the-pulse moment for Veritone One? We heard a lot of talk about multichannel strategy and its deployment—something we’ve been driving the content and creator community to adopt. One last tidbit: everyone was buzzing about the iOS 17 update, which features fewer automatic impressions in the Apple Podcasts app, giving networks and advertisers a more accurate read on genuine engagement.
