Voice of Witness advances human rights by amplifying the voices of people impacted by—and fighting against—injustice.
About us
Voice of Witness (VOW) is an oral history nonprofit that advances human rights by amplifying the voices of people impacted by—and fighting against—injustice through. VOW’s work supports essential storytelling, creating space for deep listening and learning as part of broader efforts to dismantle systems of oppression. Through programming and partnerships, VOW collaborates to document and center community voices, teach ethics-driven storytelling, and develop educational resources. Our work harnesses the power of oral history to create narrative change and a more inclusive, just world. The VOW Book Series documents human rights issues through the oral histories of people who are deeply impacted and whose lived experiences are at the heart of solutions to address injustice. The series explores issues of inequity through the lens of first-person storytelling. The VOW Education Program brings unheard stories and our ethical oral history methodology to classrooms and organizations across the US, connecting students, educators, and advocates with training and tools for storytelling in order to advance social change. Through our partnerships and consulting, VOW offers expert storytelling and program support to organizations, schools, individuals, and more. These customized projects and workshops use VOW’s award-winning approach to promote empathy, build relationships, and amplify community voices. As part of our Oral History in Practice event series earlier this year, we spoke with Fanny Julissa García, MA about her project documenting stories of family separation at the US-Mexico border. We discussed and reflected on: ➡ How oral history cannot survive in isolation ➡ Using a “chain of trust” approach in oral history work ➡ Considerations of trauma-informed interviewing ➡ The emotional toll of oral history interviews on both the narrator and interviewer ➡ Logistical challenges and the process of consent ➡ The question of compensation for narrators Did you miss the webinar? We loved collaborating on a recent workshop at 826 Valencia! VOW education staff introduced oral history as a starting point for creative writing. Students were trained in oral history skills to interview a partner about a significant personal artifact, then used the material to generate fresh new story ideas. Learn more about the impact of oral history-based education: https://lnkd.in/ezz-DF8J Shoutout to our awesome Haverford College summer interns, Calla and Jessica, for joining us at the workshop and contributing so much this summer! We had a chance to catch up with Shabnam Piryaei, director of "No Separate Survival," a powerful new documentary that amplifies the voices of asylum seekers fighting for safety and dignity in the US. Co-produced with asylum seekers, the participatory project facilitated digital arts workshops for displaced migrants in Mexico and California, coupled with access to mental health services. It aims to give asylum seekers control of their narratives and to build space for healing through creative multimedia and artistic expression. Shabnam attended a Voice of Witness workshop that informed her approach to the film. She said "I think it was the first time I’d been in community with people who do what I do... The VOW workshop gave me a sense of a broader community, as well as practical tools for being an ethical storyteller." This film is a call to action, shedding light on the real, human experiences behind headlines and statistics. Read more about the documentary in our Q&A with Shabnam: https://lnkd.in/gUM9xNqa Join us at the film screening in Oakland at ARTogether this Sunday, August 25th! #AsylumSeekers #HumanRights #ImmigrantStories #DocumentaryFilm
