#SynergyDays2024 was an incredible experience! The Barcelona edition successfully connected communities, uniting >40 EU projects and EU Digital Innovation Hubs with over 400 participants from the agri-food sector. Plenary sessions and workshops brought together SMEs, research institutes, EU policymakers, public administration, and European food and agriculture associations to share knowledge, identify challenges, and outline the next steps toward a clean and sustainable food industry. BioCoS participated under two EU projects with complementary initiatives, with workshops showcasing their impact! WATSON a flagship EU project providing cutting-edge solutions to combat food fraud, and FoodDataQuest EU targeting on pioneering data-driven solutions for an inclusive, sustainable, and healthy food system. On October 16th, the second project meeting of #FDQ took place, allowing involved partners to discuss and refine the design of a structured collaborative strategy aimed at driving data transformation in food systems within the confines of legal and policy frameworks. 🚨 The latest 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 (September 2024) highlights several food fraud cases showcasing the ongoing battle against fraudulent practices. It was a pleasure to participate in the #SynergyDays2024 event organized by SmartAgriHubs in Barcelona, Spain, held on October 14-15. The WATSON digital framework for food fraud and traceability was presented in the project pitch session. During the two-day event, the recent outcomes of the WATSON project are shared in two workshops. Day 1: "Technology, transparency, and trust: Addressing food fraud vulnerability in European agri-food supply chains"; Day 2: "Watson project solutions: Fraud detection and prevention in the fish value chain" (Hosted together with THEROS_project and FishEUTrust Project). We hope the application of digital technologies such as blockchain, IoT, and digital food passports could prevent food fraud in the whole food chains. Today, on #WorldFoodDay, we are excited to share our activities and EU projects focused on food waste reduction—a critical element in achieving global food security. 🔬 WASTELESS: Measuring and monitoring food losses in the EU, developing tools for quantifying FLW, and creating a decision support toolbox for stakeholders. 🦠 MICROORC: Leveraging microbiomes to prevent food spoilage, with innovative technologies expected to reach high maturity. 🌾 WHEATBIOME Project: Enhancing wheat products for better sustainability and health. 🔍 WATSON: An anti-counterfeit framework to identify and prevent food fraud across the supply chain. 🌊 PROMISEANG Project: Innovating zero-waste procedures for sustainable proteins from non-conventional marine sources. 🎓 foodCIRCUS Interreg Europe: A project aimed at reducing food waste in schools through pilot actions and best practices. 🍽 HORECA-FW-RED: Focused on reducing food waste in the hospitality sector by implementing best practices and fostering collaboration among stakeholders. 📊 DATA-PROCESS: Supporting mandatory food waste reporting in Hungary, concentrating on food processing and manufacturing, and creating an industry-specific food waste framework. 🔄 CATALYSIS: Aimed at reducing food waste in the catering industry through education and behavioral interventions, focusing on school canteens, restaurants, and workplace cafeterias. At the Wasteless Foundation, we believe that tackling food waste is essential for building a future where food is used wisely, resources are conserved, and no one goes hungry.

WATSON workshop 2 today at #SynergyDays2024 on traceability in the fish supply chain.  Paraskevas Bourgos and Truls R. presented ongoing work. And we also had input from partner projects THEROS_project and FishEUTrust Project.  Someone was peeping in from outside, apparently interested in the fish supply chain. 

What does it need for #traceability and #authentication technology to be implemented in the agri-food supply chain? What should be the roles and responsibilities of supply chain actors with regard to food fraud? These were some of the questions we addressed in our WATSON WP 2 workshop at the SmartAgriHubs #SynergyDays2024 in Barcelona. Inputs from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Agrifood Chain Management Group, included a presentation on the role of trust in food fraud vulnerability assessment, including fair trade considerations.
