I had an amazing time at the Our Juneteenth Celebration! Huge shoutout to Jewels of Africa and Mama Jewel for organizing another successful year of honoring Freedom Day. It was wonderful to engage in conversations about the Mayor's Grand River Cleanup and the Climate Action Campaign. On Juneteenth we celebrate Black culture and the significance of Freedom Day, marking the liberation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Let's take this moment to acknowledge the progress we've made while recognizing the ongoing work needed to achieve true equality and justice for all. By amplifying Black voices, supporting Black-owned businesses, and educating ourselves on the history and contributions of Black individuals, we can move towards a more inclusive and equitable future together.

  • Happy Juneteenth! 🎆 A national holiday only as of 2021, June 19th has long been celebrated in the African American community as our nation’s second #IndependenceDay, when Union troops marched into Galveston Bay in Confederate-controlled Texas and declared 250,000+ enslaved Texans to be legally emancipated. This monumental occurred 2.5 YEARS after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freeing enslaved Americans in formerly Confederate states. #Juneteenth is also known as “Freedom Day!” Read more about the history here: https://buff.ly/3l5jJhH Everyone is welcome to join the celebrations in #GrandRapids today! Enjoy a public Juneteenth block this afternoon (now until 7PM, https://buff.ly/3VuLpP0) then catch an event & film at Wealthy Cinema from 5-9PM (https://buff.ly/4c2k7X8). Booked today? Check out the public Juneteenth block party happening Saturday afternoon at the intersection of Oakdale and Eastern (https://buff.ly/3KOqFwq). #grandrapidsjuneteenth

Great dialogue focused on ensuring that we ground our work in justice and equity as we address climate! Important article highlighting our $20 million Environmental Justice Impact Grants https://lnkd.in/gezxpmUk and other funding opportunities and the integration of key voices from across the state! #EnvironmentalJustice #MiHealthyClimate

With over 900 attendees, the 2024 MI Healthy Climate Conference, delved deep into the ripple effects of climate action on communities, social strata, and economic sectors, shedding light on environmental justice. Themed "Accelerating Action," the conference spotlighted Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s MI Healthy Climate Plan and recent clean energy laws. Discussions emphasized the need for climate efforts to prioritize environmental justice, ensuring that all communities benefit from the rewards of climate action. A highlight was the unveiling of Michigan’s first-ever Environmental Justice Impact Grants, a $20 million program aimed at assisting environmental justice communities in addressing environmental and health challenges. This initiative underscores Michigan's commitment to supporting marginalized communities in their pursuit of a cleaner, healthier environment. The conference also featured insightful discussions moderated by Regina Strong, MS, APR, head of EGLE’s Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate, and panelists representing various organizations dedicated to environmental justice. Together, they explored ways to ground climate action in justice, highlighting the importance of community engagement and empowerment. As we continue our collective journey towards a more sustainable future, events like the MI Healthy Climate Conference serve as crucial platforms for advancing environmental justice and fostering meaningful dialogue and action. #MiEnvironment #MiHealthyClimate #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateAction

  • We are thrilled to congratulate WMEAC board member Keli Christopher, Ph.D., for being honored as the West Michigan Woman Brilliance Awards' Woman of the Year for 2024. The WMW award page describes Dr. Christopher as "a trailblazing leader and educator dedicated to advancing STEM education for students of color. As the Founder and CEO of STEM Greenhouse (@thestemgreenhouse), she champions the belief that nurturing curiosity in STEM leads to flourishing children. The third Black woman globally to earn a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering, her experiences fuel her drive to close the opportunity gap and diversify career paths for under-resourced youth. Since STEM Greenhouse's humble beginnings in 2014, Dr. Christopher has spent countless hours investing in the success of the girls and young women she teaches, whether it's going to their basketball games, taking them on field trips or otherwise. What started as math clubs for girls at local libraries has grown into an organization that serves almost 1,000 students a year. Dr. Christopher's greatest accomplishments have been successfully advocating for change in philanthropic, educational and government systems, which in turn have resulted in more equitable funding for nonprofit organizations in our community. Her honors are many, including North Carolina A&T SU, Distinguished Alumni Award, the Nolan Groce Business Leadership Award, and the Dr. MaLinda P. Sapp Legacy Award. Dr. Christopher's work is a testament to the power of one person's influence, transforming generations through education. She shares, 'All of my experiences—from being a little girl that struggled with her multiplication tables, to becoming valedictorian of Ottawa Hills High School, to the racism I experienced in graduate school, to losing my husband to cancer, and the challenges I faced leading a nonprofit—have all culminated to this point in time where others can be blessed from the journey that I've been through. For someone to look at my journey and say it is deserving of honor is beyond anything I ever imagined.'" Thank you so much, Dr. Christopher, for investing in the next generation's STEM talents and in their environmental health! 🌱

  • Deirdre Courtney Nieves, Marshall Kilgore, and Jessica Austin recently attended this year’s two-day MI Healthy Climate Conference titled “Accelerating Action.” A surprise visit by Governor Whitmer kicked off an exciting conference celebrating the huge work accomplished by the EPA and Michigan legislators this year, and outlining what's up next to #DefendOurClimate. Speakers shared about their success stories, challenges, funding opportunities, technical assistance, and other actions they are taking in the six priority areas of the MI Healthy Climate Plan: 1. Commit to environmental justice and pursue a just transition 2. Clean the electric grid 3. Electrify vehicles and increase public transit 4. Repair and decarbonize homes and businesses 5. Drive clean innovation in industry 6. Protect Michigan’s land and water WMEAC's staff enjoyed speaking with Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist about climate change and our #SolutionsForPollution, as well as Regina Strong, Head of the Michigan Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate. At the end of the conference, WMEAC got to celebrate this year's historic wins for our planet with good friends from the Great Lakes Business Network, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Climate Action Network, Moms Clean Air Force, and EDF Action. Cheers to accelerating ACTION!

  • WMEAC and our partners held an urgent press conference this week advocating for environmental safeguards for data centers. Marshall Kilgore, our Director of Engagement, spoke about the community's need for legislators to add environmental protections to two proposed MI Senate bills (SB 237 and SB 238) that plan to give tax incentives to data centers moving to the state. "One large data center can require 1 million to 5 million gallons of water a day," Marshall said. He added that the point of the conference was "not to rally against data centers, but to emphasize the collective effort required from all businesses to benefit our community," explained Kilgore. "We really need to have the correct language that protects ratepayers and requires efficiency, water regulation, and for data centers to bring their own renewable energy," Marta Johnson of Climate Cabinet said. We are grateful for the eloquence and fast teamwork of our partners at Climate Cabinet, Grand Rapids Climate Coalition, Community Collaboration on Climate Change (C4), and the GR NAACP during this important press event. We are already hearing rumblings of our influence on revised legislation that could #DefendOurClimate and protect so many Michiganders. Watch and read FOX17's news coverage here: Read an article from WOODTV here: https://buff.ly/3wO7HTs Thanks to journalists Jack Caron and David Horak for the quotes used above.
