Can we talk about badmin?
This week marks one month into my new job, which I am loving. To maximize work time and home time, I set a new intention to become totally ruthless about how I spend my time outside of work.
My husband and I equally contribute to our income and our domestic labor. Mostly, he wakes up our daughter and takes her to work, then I feed and put her to bed at night. I recognize that I am lucky - both to have a partner and to have this dynamic. I don’t know who needs to hear this but, I kissed a lot of frogs...
Outside of parenting, we have different chores we enjoy. But then there’s all the stuff that is TOTALLY UNBEARABLE. Let's call it 'badmin'.
As Ashley Chang, CEO of Sundays, a personal assistant agency specializing in parents says of the aveage age of new moms rising "this means balancing the full-attention, eyes-and-hands-on, period of parenting young children with complex problem and team management at work. Parents are doing a much harder level of work at the same time as the hardest years of parenting.”
YES. This.
So I want to share three things have changed our lives over the last few weeks.
1. Sundays
After being inspired Ashley’s posts on here, we signed up and are now working with wonderful Mariah on tasks that we don’t want to detract from working, parenting, or quality time. She is helping us with TSA, the DMV and all other acronynms that make you feel a bit queasy. We now have a family calendar to manage clashes when we both travel and remember public holidays before they’re on top of us.
2. Chat GPT life hacks
Yesterday I booked flights and hotels for our upcoming 4th July trip, supported by Chat GPT. This trip started as an experiment building a “McCarthy Vacation” GPT which I’ve been training.
My brief: “What small towns surrounded by nature should we go to for 4th July? We’re willing to travel 4 hours including drive time. We want to collect a state we’ve not been to. Please find an Americana parade and a boutique hotel with a restaurant. Needs to be toddler friendly, but we’re not into child centered activities so please no adventure parks.” Thank goodness GPTs don't judge!
We’re going to Park City, Utah if you’re interested and have a full itinerary planned for us.
This week I’ve also used a GPT to generate a custom Alphabet rhyming book. The out of work use cases are giving and giving. What are yours?
Finally…
3. Notion
I bit the bullet and signed us up for a paid account on Notion. This means that I can share to-do lists with my family and also with our new helper.
I import Chat GPT itineraries into Notion and refine them in there. You can turn the itinerary into a checklist and check it for hallucinations and feasibility.
If this sounds like it took a lot of time, some of it did and some of it didn’t. Sometimes you have to spend a little to save a lot. This is definitely true of productivity.
What are your productivity hacks to reduce the badmin?
