🌟 Empowering Women in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM): Strategies and Innovative Approaches 🌟 WRM emphasized empowering women in ASM at this year's OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains. Together with the panel, targeted strategies and innovative approaches were compiled. This is a snapshot of how we can advance gender equality in ASM: 1. 📚 Capacity Building and Training: Implement training programs to equip women with technical skills and leadership capabilities. The “Girl for Mining” program by IWiM Nigeria is a great example. 2. 🏛️ Policy Advocacy and Legal Reforms: Push for legal reforms that recognize and protect women's rights in ASM, including securing mining permits and fair labor practices, as seen with Solidaridad Latinoamérica and their engagement with Pallaqueras. 3. 🤝 Public-Private Partnerships: Forge partnerships to provide funding, resources, and market opportunities. SOFEDI’s healthcare cooperative model in the DR Congo is a notable example. 4. 🌍 Community-Led Initiatives: Involve local communities in decision-making to address gender disparities, demonstrated by ActionAid South Africa’s work with Zama Zamas. 5. 📊 Research and Data Collection: Continuously gather and analyze gender-disaggregated data to inform policy and program design, as it is critical to understand the evolving challenges and opportunities for women in ASM and beyond. The DELVE report on gender equality and ASM as well as the Women and the Mine of the Future global report by IGFMining and partners are valuable resources. By adopting these strategies and learning from global examples, we can create a more inclusive and equitable ASM sector that empowers women and promotes sustainable development. The integration of gender equality is essential for sustainable and responsible mineral supply chains. We together with GIZ Sector Programme Extractives and Development recently launched the “Guide to Gender and Mining – Issues, Actors and Initiatives” which expands the stakeholder landscape that was previously described in the “Encyclopedia of Gender and Mining” published in 2019. The guide provides an overview of the key issues, actors, initiatives and resources in the field of gender and mining and expands the range of actors. It aims to bring together practitioners, researchers and donors to advance partnerships and knowledge. Globally, over 44.67 million people are thought to work in artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), with women comprising around 30% of ASM workers. This proportion varies from country to country, with women estimated to make up as much as 70% of the ASM workforce in Guinea and as little as 4% in the Philippines. As the demand for critical minerals like copper, cobalt, nickel, and lithium rises for the energy transition, concerns grow about a resource rush that overlooks the needs of affected communities. Women's Rights and Mining, along with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, recently published the "Guide to Gender and Mining—Actors, Issues and Initiatives," which helps practitioners understand the sector's implemented activities and serves as an actor’s mapping tool, facilitating connections and the development of gender-responsive measures in mining and mineral supply chains. Ayer, durante el cuarto día del 24 Foro de la OECD - OCDE Cadenas de #MineralesResponsables, tuve el inmenso honor de participar en un panel sobre las barreras estructurales que impiden una mayor participación de las mujeres dentro del sector MAPE. Pude compartir el trabajo que estamos llevando a cabo con Solidaridad Latinoamérica para fortalecer integralmente las organizaciones de mujeres de la sector MAPE. Además, pude conocer de primera mano importantes experiencias en contextos como Nigeria, RDC y Sudáfrica, así como el impresionante trabajo de IGFMining promoviendo la Igualdad de Género en TODO el sector minero (y no solo en la gran minería). En un contexto global donde diferentes países vienen atravesando reformas para la formalización del sector MAPE, los siguientes objetivos resultan críticos para la #EquidadDeGénero: (1) Adoptar una #PerspectivaDeGénero para diseñar normas que no dejen a nadie atrás. (2) Facilitar servicios de #fortalecimiento de asociaciones de mujeres en comunidades MAPE locales. (3) Reforzar capacidades de #RecolecciónDeData y apropiación por parte de las asociaciones locales. (4) Facilitar el acceso al #financiamiento y a medios de vida alternativos, especialmente necesarios en contextos donde la mecanización de la MAPE cortará los trabajos menos especializados que ahora asumen las mujeres. (5) Facilitar la provisión de servicios de #ProtecciónSocial que permitan a las mujeres trabajar en igualdad de condiciones. (6) Facilitar la #CoordinaciónMultilateral para asegurar todos estos objetivos. De este modo, llega a su fin una emocionante semana en el foro de la OCDE. Earlier today, IWiM's Advisory Council member Olusola Olaniyi (Ogunlade) spoke at a partner-led session on the topic "Reclaiming power? Perspectives from the Global South on addressing structural barriers to female participation in artisanal and small-scale mining" at the OECD - OCDE Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains. She shared her firsthand experiences with the gendered social and environmental impacts within the ASM sector. This discussion was hosted by Women's Rights and Mining, a multi-stakeholder group that IWiM is proud to be a member of. Other speakers included viviane SEBAHIRE from SOFEDI, Mauricio Winkelried from Solidaridad Network, Sifiso Senzo Dladla from ActionAid, with Ege Tekinbas from IGFMining moderating. Additionally, Women's Rights and Mining published a new report this week titled "A Guide to Gender and Mining - Actors, Issues and Initiatives," which IWiM contributed to and is featured in. This guide builds on the 2019 ‘Encyclopaedia of Gender and Mining’ produced by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the Women’s Rights in Mining (WRM) multi-stakeholder initiative, expanding the range of actors included. 🔍 What are structural barriers to female participation in artisanal and small-scale mining? 🔎   Yesterday at the OECD - OCDE Forum on #ResponsibleMineralSupplyChains, the gendered impacts of #ASM were addressed from various regional perspectives. Our panel discussed the gender-specific impacts within the #ESG framework in the mining sector. Key insights include:   Mauricio Winkelried (PERU SOLIDARIDAD) highlighted the struggles of Pallaqueras, female resource recyclers, who lack legal recognition, leading to informal and unsafe working conditions. Solidaridad’s network for female ASM workers in Peru offers much-needed support.   viviane SEBAHIRE Maramuke (SOFEDI) focused on health impacts, including STDs and contaminated water in the DR Congo. SOFEDI’s health initiatives and female-led cooperatives empower women in decision-making and addressing these issues.   Sifiso Dladla Dladla (ActionAid South Africa) described the challenges faced by Zama zamas, informal artisanal miners. Women face restricted market access, lower earnings, and safety concerns. Dedicated spaces and permits for women are urgently needed.   Olusola Olaniyi (Ogunlade) (IWiM) highlighted the risks of sexual and gender-based violence in remote mining areas and the exclusion of women from consultations in Nigeria. Programmes like “Girl for Mining” aim to empower and include women in the sector.   Ege Tekinbas (IGFMining) emphasised the need for gender-disaggregated data in ASM. With this, gender-responsive policies can be enabled to fulfill the much needed integration of promoting gender equality in the ASM sector.
