Our Restoration Ecology Director, Ashley Zavagno, CERP, CE recently volunteered with the Upper Deschutes Watershed Council to perform macroinvertebrate sampling on Whychus Creek (a tributary of the Deschutes). She found some big stoneflies and accidentally caught a juvenile brown trout (non-native). It was a beautiful day on the river!

On World Nature Conservation Day, WRA congratulates Darwin Mayhew on his recent publication - check it out!
Mesopredator release is the re-ordering of food chains caused by apex predator loss, allowing medium-sized #carnivore populations to increase. This impacts these species’ prey in turn. A new paper led by Darwin Mayhew explores this process in relation to the loss of Sunda #clouded #leopards and #forest integrity in #Borneo. Results suggest that the loss of forest integrity triggers mesopredator population increase, as seen in rising Sunda leopard cat numbers, which threatens some terrestrial birds such as pittas and Bulwer’s pheasants. This work highlights the need for more research into species interactions to inform holistic conservation efforts. Access the paper here: https://lnkd.in/decBCZqc
