Electrical & Lighting Shop Supervisor

Full-Time and Permanent; Non-Exempt; 8 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year; Grade PP

General Responsibilities

This is the supervisory level of the Electrical and Lighting Shop trades series. Plans, coordinates, and supervises the maintenance activities of assigned skilled trades personnel and contractors. Directs the assignments of Trades Helpers, level II, and level III maintenance trades employees in the appropriate class series; provides technical advice and production assistance when necessary and inspects all major projects. Develops and refines the work routine of assigned personnel and carries assignments through to completion; does related work as required or assigned. Assignment is electrical related skilled trades maintenance and installation work.

Education And Experience

Completion of high school, including being supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship training. Experience in the appropriate trade, some of which will derive from a level III (lead) capacity or equivalent. A combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability can be reviewed.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Possession of an appropriate, valid automotive vehicle operator's license approved and accepted by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, and valid certifications or licenses required for the related level III classifications supervised. A Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulations issued Master Electrical License is required.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plan distribution of work; assigns tasks or projects; explains work requirements and methods to subordinates as needed and keeps them informed on changes in policy and procedure. Oversees the performance of maintenance agreement contractors and assist in the development of trades related systems for new buildings under the design, Inspect new buildings for discrepancies at walk through.
  • Review work in progress for compliance with departmental performance and safety standards and aid when problems arise.
  • Retrieve and prioritize work order data from a computer work order management system via the Internet. Responds to emails generated by classified employees as well as administrators and takes appropriate action to resolve complaints.
  • Coordinate work with other affected shops as required; follows up to ensure that work is completed properly and in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Make cost estimates as required; identifies needs for new and replacement equipment; approves orders for parts and materials; approves payment of invoices; assesses new vendors and products; maintains and reports on staff time and attendance. Reconciles employee spending cards with vendor invoices through the district’s financial based program. Investigates and resolves discrepancies in billing statements. Manages accounts payable to contractors and vendors.
  • Coordinate the outage and repair of utilities that are detrimental to the normal operation of schools and related buildings. These include the disruption of electrical service, exterior and interior lighting, motors, and transformers.
  • Respond to emergency situations in buildings caused by vandalism, material failures and/or natural acts.
  • Review daily visa transactions in work program and reconcile monthly statements.
  • Review, schedule and assign work through the MUNIS Work Order System.
