#Legacy150: 'The Museum will not be Decolonised' conference schedule is now live https://lnkd.in/gyTEreAh Sumaya Kassim writes that “Museums are not neutral in their preservation of history. In fact, arguably, they are sites of forgetfulness and fantasy”. Her discussion was based on work she and colleagues did with Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and it holds true of many museums throughout the UK. It is the “forgetfulness” of the objects’ lived history and the “fantasy” of these objects being out of time that is endemic in museum spaces. In this conference we discuss objects held in non-ethnographic museums and explore what they mean as representations of human experience, how we can accurately represent their lived experience using digital technologies and their weight as political and social signifiers in the contemporary world. The conference provides a space for interested parties to discuss the ways objects are presented and their histories represented.

Ten years ago today, I joined 9/11 family members, rescue and recovery workers, and survivors, to dedicate the 9/11 Memorial & Museum. Today it stands as a permanent reminder of those killed, and the service, bravery, and compassion of those who stood together in unity during those dark hours. The 9/11 Memorial Museum preserves an essential moment in our history for future generations, ensuring that we will never forget. Join me in visiting the #911Museum, which will now offer free admission to New Yorkers on the first Monday of each month beginning June 3.

So much to say about this project: 1.) We had an engaged client who trusted us to take risks 2.) We aligned clearly on vision from the get-go 3.) We had gorgeous content to design around and be inspired from And I think it’s paid off. We won an award. We’re getting some attention through various industry channels. It’s nice to feel validated, but the secret sauce was this: we had a client who shared our values. We’ve been talking a lot internally about our superpowers, our stories and values. One thing remains consistent: We believe the mundane can be marvelous. That being status quo is actually riskier than digging for authenticity. That brands who are brave and have a POV will always cut through the noise. Kudos to our amazing clients, friends and collaborators over at The Mansion. If you are local and a history buff, please do yourself a favor and visit (or at least poke around the site’s virtual tour!) The Louise Steinman von Hess Foundation entrusted Bom Bom to create a unique website for Wright’s Ferry Mansion, an 18th-century historic house museum. Because of its close quarters and faithful historic preservation, visitation is limited. To serve those unable to visit the property, an interactive experience was created to offer a rich digital journey through the Mansion. We’re pleased to announce that we’ve won an Honorable Mention Award from awwwards.com for our work on this project, and the site is being featured on siteofsites.co! Download: Museums and intangible cultural heritage. Towards a third space in the heritage sector https://lnkd.in/d8ShJ7su This book is concentrated around the concept of intersection. The many activities conducted by museum professionals and communities, groups and individuals (CGIs) related to intangible cultural heritage, are seen as colourful strings that at some point intersect and form diverse patterns. These patterns represent spaces that offer new and enriched insights into heritage. Throughout the book, we look for ways in which the different ‘paradigms’ can strengthen each other and how their ‘encounter’ creates a ‘third space’. A range of heritage professionals and ICH practitioners took part in this quest. We believe that the diversity of theoretical approaches and contribution formats reflects the values behind the diverse, holistic and integrated approach to heritage which this book wishes to promote. https://lnkd.in/d645MWnb

📢 We want your feedback. ✍ We’re considering revising two of our resources (Numbering and Re-numbering). Numbering gives guidance on numbering your collection, on different types and number formats and a summary of commonly occurring issues surrounding numbering. It was revised to support the requirements of the Accreditation Scheme for Museums and Galleries in the UK and updated for Spectrum 5.0. Re-numbering explores re-numbering, suggests why it is a poor use of resources, and gives some examples of numbering problems and their solutions. It also places numbering and re-numbering in the context of the requirements of the Accreditation Scheme for Museums and Galleries in the UK. We currently have two short surveys, one for each resource. Please follow the links below to leave your feedback 👇 Numbering - https://lnkd.in/eiaeGpTi Re-numbering - https://lnkd.in/e4jSJzH7 The deadline to have your say is 9am on Monday 10 June. #Museums #Guidance #Feedback #MuseumDocumentation

TL;DR:Involve your communities with this review for Significance 2.0. Please dispel gatekeeping practices - relinquish institutional control in favour of community collaboration. The legacy of the Burra Charter (in particular the 1999 update) is evident in the REVIVE National Cultural Policy, where the term 'place' is used to distance itself from the terms of the World Heritage Convention (1972). Laurajane Smith (2006) has written extensively of the existence of an "authorised heritage discourse" and I think its imperative that we recognise 'place', whilst a different term, has not shifted from the underlying bias in heritage instruments in favour of 'tangible' aspects of hertiage; the consideration of GLAM institutions as 'authorisers' of hertiage is also tied up in the physical buildings of these institutions which are common 'places' for stories to be preserved, told, shared. The other aspect of the Burra Charter's legacy that lingers is the pervasive perspective of what constitutes "community engagement" or "involvement" in cultural heritage practices. Whilst the Burra Charter did advance heritage frameworks for considering WHO determines WHAT is cultural heritage and HOW it is cared for, it has also hindered appreciation for cultural heritage in mainstream society. For example, on page 33 of REVIVE, the Government has pledged to considered ratifying the '2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage' (there is nuance to further discuss this convention on its own, however for now, note ratification is generally viewed as a positive step both critically and amongst the cultural sector in Australia) - however it is only mentioned when considering 'Intangible Cultural Heritage' with respect to PLACE. Significance 2.0 (2009) acknowledges its foundational ties to the Burra Charter, and it does explicitly address in the Preface the relationship between collections, institutions and defining identities: "In assessing significance, power is wielded in constructing societal memory and identity. Collection custodians therefore have a responsibility to consult affected communities and to be hospitable to alternative views in recognition of the fact that significance decisions inevitably privilege some memories and marginalise or exclude others." (Russell and Winkworth 2009, vii) Moving forward, it is in the spirit of this point that I would love to see the 'affected communities' brought into the development of the framework itself - and who better to bring them in, than the institutions themselves.
Galleries, libraries, archives, museums and #CulturalHeritage enthusiasts - we want to hear from you 💭 We invite you to have your say on the refresh of Significance 2.0: a guide to assessing the significance of collections. The guide was published in 2009 and will be updated to reflect changes in attitudes and collecting procedures – tell us, what should be included in the revised guide?
