In a recent interview with Mining Review Africa, Dr Vanessa Ushie, Acting Director of the African Natural Resources Management and Investment Centre, a division of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), and Investing in African Mining Indaba 2024 Advisory Board member on the Finance and Investment Committee, said, “It’s fair to say that the mining industry is entering uncharted waters. There is much uncertainty on the future of mining and extraction in general, due to #ClimateChange. Finance and investment strategies are evolving as well, as markets perceive #ClimateRisk in mining differently. Innovation is creating opportunities for business growth and expansion, but also displacing workers and affecting states’ fiscal returns. “Countries that have used #coal fired power plants need finance to phase out coal plants and transition to #GreenEnergy. Workers and communities affected by the structural disruption in mining have to be compensated and, in some cases, reskilled. As we countdown toward the Investing in African Mining Indaba #MI24, it is important to appreciate how, over the decades, the sector has evolved and taken center stage in shaping economies around the world. Despite a number of challenges facing the sector, there has been several success stories and anecdotes to be shared amongst the players. Reflecting on this year’s theme “Embracing the power of positive disruption: A bold new future for African mining” it will be interesting to hear and engage in various discussions on how we can be catalysts in achieving this.
