Recently, Max Cyril, our Perth Acoustic Section Manager, joined a virtual panel discussion focusing on "Sound Solutions for Next-Generation Learning Spaces". Hosted by CPD Live, Max spoke alongside Rob Jones from Autex Acoustics Australia and Andrea Wilson from ARM Architecture. Thrilled to share our latest open-access publication in the International Journal of Construction Education and Research! 🏗️📚 Our article, "Unreal … a Typology for Learning from Virtual Site Visits", explores virtual site visits (VSVs) through the lens of teaching activities and learning aims. Together with my BEL+T colleagues Kate T., James Thompson, and Sarah Song, we introduce a VSV typology that identifies diverse and innovative uses for VSVs in built environments education. The typology distinguishes between those VSVs developed to inspire and contextualize; those that demonstrate or demarcate; and those that ground abstract experiences via specific locations. This research suggests complementary roles for virtual and physical site visits within hybrid and flexible learning environments, even while much teaching returns to campus. Loved reading Rebecca Ackermann's report on the updated curriculum at Stanford's d.school — in particular, the question "should we build it?" It made me wonder — how are ethics taught to the other disciplines involved in building a product? I feel anxious at the idea that designers are meant to serve as a moral compass on a team — it doesn't seem fair (or realistic) and it has that old familiar whiff of exceptionalism that tends to get us in trouble. Designers are rarely the final decision-makers in terms of business strategy, so I'm curious: how are we teaching our MBA or engineering students to consider these same questions? Maybe it is already baked in? Would truly love to know how much your education taught you about how to make ethical business decisions and how to think about trading off popularity, prestige or profit when it's clear that the product may cause damage to its users or the world around us.

Join an incredibly ambitious, creative and collaborative centre for doctoral training funded by Leverhulme on Nature Based Acoustics to research new #sociallyintelligent #architecture and built environments learning from #hearingsystems found in #nature. This PhD project would develop a first of a kind intelligent multidimensional communication system for socially smart urban energy and water management drawing on visual-spatial intelligence related to energy and water use. The project is highly multidisciplinary in approach – drawing expertise from both the architectural and visual research field (Oliveira) and hearing behaviours in insects (Windmill) to develop new knowledge on management of energy and water infrastructures inspired by acoustics. We will consider candidates from a range of disciplinary backgrounds including #architecture, #computational science, #design, science and technology studies and #engineering.

Congratulations to Professor Philip Plowright , Chair of the Department of Design at the Lawrence Tech College of Architecture and Design. Professor Plowright was invited to present the Presidential Colloquium at the LTU 12th annual Research Day on Friday, April 19, at 8:00 am EST. Dr. Plowright's research has centered around cognitive processes in design, especially as applied to design methods, teaching and learning. Dr. Plowright is an architect and design theorist whose research is focused on cognitive semantics, social semiotics, conceptual processes, and methodology focused on the built environment. His most recent book is Urban Design Made by Humans (Routledge 2023) co-authored with Dr. Anirban Adhya. Earlier works include Making Architecture Through Being Human (Routledge 2020), Revealing Architectural Design: Methods, Frameworks & Tools (Routledge 2014) and chapters on theoretical issues of wilderness and sustainable design in Architecture and Sustainability: Critical Perspectives (ACCO 2015) and Sustainability and the City: Urban Poetics and Politics (Lexington Books 2017). His award-winning design work has been published in many academic proceedings, journals, and popular architectural magazines. Dr. Plowright’s presentation is titled “Where You Stand Matters: Space as an Interdisciplinary Paradigm.” Moving from cognitive processes and the building blocks of human thinking, Plowright will present foundational research that links fundamental thinking structures to how humans make sense of their world, create meaning, and bring new things into the world. The exploration starts with how language and the built environment are intimately entwined, and then expands through an interdisciplinary discussion that will touch on cognitive linguistics, architecture, social geography, spatial semiotics, urban design, and computational design.
