Before we get together later this week in Brussels for our mid-year in-person meeting, ASD is delighted to be taking part in the latest Sustainable Palm Oil Dialogue meeting. Organised by Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), IDH, FEDIOL and APAG - Oleochemicals Europe, it will be an important session to focus on a subject much discussed by ASD and our members: emissions reduction in palm supply chains. We’re excited to be a part of the discussion and explore how the sector might work towards more robust greenhouse gas footprinting and emission reduction calculations associated with certified sustainable palm oil types – from mass balance to segregated supply and identity preserved. The ASD team – including Ricki Berkenfeld, Alexandra Kolev and Charlene Collison from BSR, and Lenaïg Benjamin, Sarah Ceska and Alex Guillet from TRANSITIONS – will be on the ground so look out for them and come say ‘hello’. #SPOD #RSPO #SPODEurope #sustainablepalmoil #certifiedpalmoil

Who else is heading to The Sustainable Palm Oil Dialogue Europe 2024? In the 16 years I've been working in #Sustainablepalmoil, this will be the first time I've headed to mainland Europe for a conference. Really looking forward to meeting Conal Judd-English and Rose McCulloch from Efeca | B Corp certified 2023 in person, and catching up with Lior Torenberg and Geza Toth, Ph.D. from CarbonSpace. Also keen to see Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)'s prisma system in action - could be incredibly useful for businesses that need to comply with EUDR and UKDD.

🌴 Since 2014, ASI has been responsible for overseeing the work of Certification Bodies for the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), a partnership that contributes to sustainable palm oil production. Over the past 20 years, #RSPO has united to transform the global palm oil sector. This initiative is inspired by our shared vision of a sustainable industry that benefits people, safeguards the planet, and promotes prosperity for rural communities worldwide. We join RSPO in celebrating the significant milestones of the past two decades – from conserving over 360,000 hectares to date under RSPO Principles and Criteria Certification, to remediating over 100,000 hectares of land and improving the lives of over half a million workers in the global palm oil industry under the RSPO certification system. Given our mutual commitment to fostering stronger partnerships, we are enthusiastic about building on our progress and driving a more sustainable future. We are looking beyond the horizon and towards the Next 20. #ASIassurance #RSPONext20 #SustainablePalmOil #StakeholderEngagement

It all began with a vision – a vision to transform the palm oil industry sustainably. 🌴 In 2007, when the RSPO launched the Certification System, it accelerated positive change, reshaping the landscape of palm oil production. With a focus on empowering smallholders, fostering sustainable practices and protecting the ecosystem, this system laid the groundwork for inclusivity and progress. ♻ It covers the most significant environmental and social impacts of palm oil production and the immediate inputs to production, such as seed, chemicals and water, and social impacts related to on-farm labour and community relations. 🤝 #RSPO #RSPONext20 #SustainablePalmOil

New research from ZSL just released! Our latest assessment exposes a significant gap in palm oil traceability, particularly in companies' disclosures of plantation geolocations. This gap renders the industry's robust zero deforestation commitments difficult to verify. With the impending EU deforestation regulation (#EUDR) set to take effect by end-2024, companies trading in soft commodities such as palm oil, beef, soy, and natural rubber will be mandated to prove their products are deforestation-free. We anticipate similar regulations from the UK and US, mirroring the EUDR, to follow soon. This marks a pivotal moment in ensuring sustainable industry practices. Palm oil companies will need to act soon to ensure all their plantations are mapped to allow for verification of social and environmental commitments. #SustainablePalmOil #Conservation #EnvironmentalRegulation"
📈 NEW RESEARCH – The 2023 SPOTT assessment of 100 of the world’s top #PalmOil companies is now live! Over two-thirds of assessed companies have a clear public commitment to zero deforestation, a hopeful sign ahead of the December 2024 rollout of the new European Union Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR). Alarmingly, less than 12% of the companies assessed have published the geolocations of their third-party supplier plantations – crucial data for verifying zero-deforestation commitments. While progress is underway, achieving deforestation-free palm oil production remains an elusive goal without robust traceability. As the EUDR looms, we need support from all stakeholders in the palm oil sector to keep companies traceable and accountable. EU Deforestation Regulation comes into force December 2024: 🗺 Operators must know the plot of production for palm oil, cocoa, coffee, rubber, wood, soy & cattle imported into the single market 🌳 The company must not source from plots that have deforested since 31 December 2020 👩🌾 The commodity must have been produced legally 📜 All imports must be covered by a due diligence statement Companies are currently mapping their supply chains, when they have the data, they should disclose it. Doing so demonstrates their commitment to landscape level sustainability efforts and allows stakeholders to assess supply chain risk.

Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) launched a jurisdictional approach to certify palm oil suppliers at large-scale and to make the palm oil certification process more efficient. This certification initiative requires multi-stakeholder involvement so its implementation can run smoothly and on target, this video from Kaleka explores how the RSPO’s jurisdictional approach works.
