Thank you for publishing my op-ed The Seattle Times! "Now, at 60, 70 and 80 years old, these adoptees are logging on to mentorship sessions with the nonprofit I founded, the Adoptee Mentoring Society. Through tears, they say things like, “My adoptive mother died four months ago, and now I’m finally free to try to find my biological parents. My adoptive mom would’ve been crushed if she knew I wanted to do this." Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/gMy2enwW #adoption

At a certain age one does the math, if they haven’t already. I was born and adopted in California, so the record is still sealed unless I randomly get extremely creative or lucky. But I would love to know more, anything, about my birth mother. If she still around, I continue to wish her well. If she’s not still around, I’m sorry we didn’t have the opportunity. That said, the realities of 1957 (white) California mean I also respect her decision, if she had one. And if she didn’t, I’m sorry about that and just hope her life went well enough.

Thank you so much, Angela! I’m a Baby Scoop Era adoptee about to turn 55. Even after being in reunion since 2006, my adoptive parents have still never answered very basic questions for me. Telling a person they were “loved just like our own” is an answer that helps the adoptive parent without giving the adoptee what they’re really needing and wanting and deserving of knowing. Thank you for your strong voice, and it was good to hear you in Denver in April.

Thank you for sharing the experiences of older adoptees, and normalizing our need to connect to our own adoption story- at every age.
