This Human Rights Day, we proudly reflect on our nation's remarkable journey towards upholding and advancing human rights since the dawn of democracy.   As citizens, we understand that along with rights come responsibilities, including respect for the rights of others, advocating against discrimination and intolerance and actively contributing to societal well-being .These responsibilities are at the heart of our Meqoqo ya mookodi ('tales/conversations of the rainbow' in Sesotho) initiative, which seeks to nurture a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment within each individual at McCain South Africa.   Regardless of whether we're in our workplaces, communities, schools, or homes, let's embody the fundamental values of equality, inclusion, and human dignity. How many of us are familiar with the African dream? #agenda2063 has set out aspirations for a better and more prosperous continent. Unfortunately, we- the young people, who should be driving the agenda and ultimately benefit from it, don't know about it. To be honest, how many of us know about #agenda2063 ?Are we mapping our development priorities to it? A lot more needs to be done to raise awareness among our young people. One way to do it is to support and engage youth- led organizations in articulating the dream to its main beneficiaries- the African youth. We cannot build #theafricawewant without the main proponents of growth and development in Africa. Bring the #africanyouth on board. It is our dream, isn't it? Together we are positively changing the lives of young people across the country! There is a strong call to action to safeguard not only the rights of our children but their childhood itself. Many are forced into a position of maturity long before necessary, due to circumstance, lack of opportunity etc. As a country we have the obligation, further entrenched through the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, to ensure a lived reality of dignity, respect, and equality. To do so, requires providing young South Africans with the knowledge and skills necessary to deal with the various issues faced, be it economic or societal. What are your thoughts? A typical contradiction of the LNOB mantra in international development companies/organizations is the requirement that job applicants be recommended by your staff member or someone they know. When you ask the question, “who recommended you to this position” as you do on your application forms, you typically leave behind those who are not recommended and they are more than those are in your network. Those who are left behind are not in distant faraway places; they are right there with you. Yet, we leave them behind every day, and say we work towards leaving no one behind. I hope there can be some soul-searching about these discriminatory practices in international development organizations. Happy World Humanitarian Day.
