As a man raised by generations of women before him, I’m quite appalled and disheartened by the gender biases that exist within architecture and interior design. One such example is the use of the label “woman architect”- a subtle, seemingly harmless, but pervasive form of sexism that exists, despite a 1:1 gender ratio in the architecture and interior design industry. A recent interaction on LinkedIn highlighted the deep-seated nature of this bias. An architect persistently referred to his female counterparts as "woman architects". When I brought it up, he got defensive and was unwilling to acknowledge the sexist, harmful undertones of his differentiation. This conversation, rather than an isolated incident, mirrors a broader resistance to recognizing and addressing gender biases within the profession. As professionals, I think it's time to question why we cling to these outdated labels and what they imply about our values and perceptions. The term "woman architect" is ridiculous in exactly the same way the term “man architect” sounds utterly preposterous. Let's open the floor to a more enlightened dialogue. Access is a beautiful thing. Like, literally it can be beautiful, not just functional. Santa Monica’s Tongva Park is a great example of this; a serene modern urban park built with accessibility and sustainability in mind-with gorgeously designed ramps and inclines everywhere, including it’s mini outside amphitheater where the incline doubles as a seat. As a disabled industrial designer I see so much design potential for innovation and beauty when you add in inclusive factors, but the design world sees making spaces ADA and inclusive as a chore and as segregated design. Designers often view accessibility for disabled as utilitarian and thus studios traditionally see designing inclusivity as functional looking rather than realizing inclusive design can not only be universal but beautiful. This just requires getting out of the design box. Society fails to see that nothing that’s been designed to include or for disabled people has NEVER not been usable by non disabled. Remember, thoughtful inclusive design means everyone wins AND the potential for innovation. Take it from me, someone who is a designer of products and spaces, has traveled around the world and is disabled. Inclusive design doesn’t hurt anyone, but the lack of it does. Check out her Q&A below: 1. How did you get started in the A/E/C Industry? I decided when I was about 8/9 years old that I wanted to be an architect. I was drawing plans of houses and schools at that age and building things with toys all the time. 2. What inspires you to design? In high school I found Interior Architecture as a college major and quicky latched on to that as I wanted to make the most impactful change to humanity as I could, and designing the interiors seemed like the best way to do that. Design allowed me to marry my interests in art, math, science, and people, while also ultimately trying to make the world a better place. 3. What’s the coolest or most interesting thing you’re working on right now? Right now, I am working on a smoking lounge addition. One thing that is interesting is how we are trying to handle circulating air in and out of this space while also keeping smoke from entering the offices that are above. 4. What has been the most memorable moment in your career? Getting put on Construction Administration for a new train station project early on when I was about 24 years old with no knowledge of the project or any experience in construction. I learned A LOT on that project, and it propelled my career in a big way. 5. What is your proudest accomplishment? When I redesigned an existing tennis center and was told by the tournament staff that I made their lives easier and better than they thought possible. 6. What advice do you have for young women entering the A/E/C industry? Stay vocal about your goals and how you want to be challenged/grow.
