Ten years ago, I moved to Dallas to start my new job at this company called Hanley Wood Exhibitions. My first day of work, also my birthday, I joked with everyone, "For my birthday, I gifted myself a new job."
Reflecting on the last ten years, I've been able to travel, grow, learn, volunteer, and experience some of the best of times (and not-so-great times). It's all been worth it.
What I've learned:
1. Always Know Your Numbers 📊 : Whether it's your % to sales goals, number of sponsorships $$$ fulfilled or the status of the project you're managing, know. your. numbers. You look good when you know your numbers and so does your boss.
2. Build Your Network 🤝: I have met the greatest people who have become friends, mentors and advocates for me through out my career. They are the ones I know will help me with whatever strange request I have, or to simply listen as I figure out what I need to do next.
3. Don't Stop Learning 📚 : Get a professional certification, read a few business books, or find something else that interests you to experience. I took a storytelling class from an improv comedy company and it has immensely helped with my presentation skills.
4. Try the Things That Scare You 😱 : Speaking of presentations, I was PETRIFIED when I first spoke at an industry conference (SISO - Society of Independent Show Organisers) and I legitimately practiced in the shower, before bed, and to my roommate. Things get easier the more you do them, I promise.
5. Have Some Fun 🎉..... because we all deserve to have a little fun.
🥂 To another 10 years!
And in the meantime, enjoy this photo from my first trade show worked (Remodeling Show in Baltimore) and my most recent trade show (World of Concrete in Vegas).
