AFP and The Conversation France collaborated to investigate the nine planetary boundaries that are critical to humanity's survival. This project was funded by the Solutions Journalism Accelerator and it includes creating podcasts and articles that helped people understand these complex issues. Their work focused on real-world examples from the Global South, demonstrating how people are addressing climate and biodiversity challenges. Women, environment, solution journalism A six month program by KirkukNow: Amplifying the role of female journalists in environmental reporting in northern Iraq  This project aims to address the critical lack of coverage and awareness of the devastating environmental realities in northern Iraq; have a positive effect on the project regions through environmental education and targeted reporting in the local media on climate change and its effects by trained female journalists on solution-based environmental reporting. This year, the focus is on the role of accurate and independent journalism in addressing the global environmental crisis—a pressing issue that impacts us all. United Nations UN Environment Programme Journalistic integrity is vital for fostering informed public debates and ensuring that issues such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss are brought to the forefront. As we navigate the complexities of this crisis, it is crucial that the South African public has access to impartial and accurate information to make informed decisions and support sustainable policies. On this World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the journalists who brave challenges to bring critical environmental stories to light, contributing to a well-informed public that can advocate for effective action and protect our planet for future generations. NEW STUDY OUT Not in My (Media) Backyard: Climate Justice and Global Media Political Economy By Adalberto Fernandes https://lnkd.in/eeppVxqu ABSTRACT Journalism's economic crisis affecting the Global South and Semi-Peripheral countries has made them more vulnerable to the mainstream media conglomerates from the Global North. The control of global agendas of information is also an opportunity to influence the political narrative about responsibilities regarding climate change. The objective of this research is to analyse how CNN Brazil and CNN Portugal depict the US climate crisis and to evaluate the influence of CNN's presence in these countries. A qualitative critical discourse analysis suggests that the US is presented as the primordial victim of climate change, being the climate change portrayed as an abstract entity that is non-politically culpable for the catastrophe. Also, the expansion of CNN has reduced Brazilian and Portuguese newsrooms to a translational work of news originally made by CNN headquarters, which is sometimes unethically disguised as original journalistic work. However, there are, even if rare, signs of resistance that read the US crisis through Brazilian and Portuguese concerns. 2024 World Press Freedom Day Message. As we commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2024 under the theme "A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis," we must consider journalism's vital role in tackling the severe environmental challenges our nation and planet face. Unfortunately, our media's failure to effectively hold the government accountable for critical environmental issues such as illegal mining (galamsey), deforestation, and worsening sanitation is a matter of alarming concern. The ongoing degradation of our water bodies and forests poses significant threats to our environment, as well as to the health and livelihoods of our communities. It is crucial that the media, with its power to expose these harmful activities, inspires society and relevant authorities into action. As a leader committed to building the Ghana we want, I am steadfast in my commitment to fostering a stronger partnership between the government and the media. Together, we will protect our natural resources for the benefit of future generations. Nordic journalists aim to intervene when reporting on environmental issues. They do not only see themselves as objective news providers or critical watchdogs, but also as educators and advocates. This is found in a new qualitative study examining the self-perceptions of professional environmental journalists in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden.  "They renegotiate professional norms and practices in order to interpret and make sense of environmental issues", say the authors.    "Countries around the globe are affected by environmental changes. As powerful actors in environmental communication – able to elevate issues to the public agenda and frame them from selected perspectives – professional news media can have a vital position in facilitating future-oriented discussions and solutions regarding the environment, nature, and climate. How journalists perceive their roles is therefore of importance.
