The contenders for South Korea's airborne early warning and control capability, with a budget of $2.26 billion for four aircraft, are: 1. Boeing: - Offering the E-7, a 737-based platform. - Aerial refueling capability for on-station times up to 20 hours. - Claims unmatched multirole electronically scanned array radar sensing and tracking. - Production-ready with lower operating and sustainment costs, high mission readiness rates, and interoperability. - Boeing executives claim a 96% availability rate for the E-7. - Highlights commonality with existing Korean E-737s for training efficiencies and life-cycle cost savings. 2. Saab: - Proposing the GlobalEye with a Bombardier Global 6500 airframe. - Features an Erieye extended-range radar atop the fuselage. - Emphasizes its design suitability for South Korea's Air Force. - Offers technology transfer to enhance Korea's strategic independence. - Touts rapid delivery and affordability. - Saab is the 33rd biggest defense contractor globally. 3. L3Harris Technologies (in tandem with Korean Air and Israel Aerospace Industries): - Presents the Phoenix solution using a Global 6500 airframe. - Integrates Elta Systems-made conformal radars and artificial intelligence algorithms. - Claims low sustainment costs and at least a 95% operational availability rate. - Plans for modifications in Texas and radar integration in Israel for initial two aircraft. - Korean Air leads work on the remaining two aircraft in-country and handles sustainment. - L3Harris emphasizes agreements with Korean partners for full support in Korea. - L3Harris is the ninth-largest defense company globally, and Israel Aerospace Industries is ranked 29th. General Information: - South Korea aims to enhance its self-defense capabilities, taking on more responsibilities from the U.S. - The new AEW&C aircraft will supplement existing Boeing E-737 planes. - The primary focus is on monitoring North Korean missiles and defending South Korea's airspace. - The Defense Acquisition Program Administration is currently evaluating the proposals. #wingedmonkeys

"All future Su-57 fighters delivered to the Russian Air Force by the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) will be powered by the advanced and more powerful Stage 2 engine, also called Izdeliye 30. The supercruise-capable engine can take the jet to supersonic speeds without engaging the afterburner, reducing heat signature, enhancing fuel efficiency and thrust, and cutting maintenance and life-cycle costs. Indeed, Russian officials insist that even with the previous engine, the Su-57 was more than capable and met all performance criteria." I break down the tactical, technical aspects and Russia's strategic calculations driving its engine upgrade plans for the Su-57 for the EurAsian Times (I strongly recommend reading the piece IN FULL and NOT go by the headline. Visit the hyperlinks that contain my articles on other facets of the Su-57's development, to trace the evolution of my analyses and the subject in its entirety. This is NOT a Su-57 praise piece). https://lnkd.in/dbuka4GW

Hermeus has been awarded a contract by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to mature hypersonic aircraft subsystem and mission system technology. Hermeus will utilize its commercial high-speed flight test prototype, Quarterhorse, to support technical maturation and risk reduction for future hypersonic aircraft. The contract is part of DIU’s Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing Capabilities (HyCAT) initiative, which aims to utilize commercial flight test capabilities to expand the Department of Defense’s high-speed flight test capacity. Quarterhorse is the first program on Hermeus’ roadmap to hypersonic flight. The program culminates into two primary objectives: 1. Demonstrate Chimera’s turbine-based combined cycle engine capabilities in-flight 2. Break the nearly 50-year-old airspeed record held by the legendary SR-71 #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/g7TdMg5Q

Starting today, 29 squadrons across 12 Air Force Bases will kick off the 2024 Mission Execution Excellence Program (MEEP) competition. MEEP is an incentive-based, cultural change initiative focused on optimizing aviation fuel use in heavy aircraft to maximize combat capability in preparation for conflict in a fuel-constrained environment (i.e., INDOPACOM). MEEP encourages energy efficient behaviors by offering monetary incentives in the form of rebates and awards to commend exemplary unit performance. Incentives help to fund unit-level requirements in proportion to fuel savings, a unique approach that rapidly drives adoption and amplifies the impact of funding. Squadrons enrolled in MEEP are assessed based on multiple metrics, including accurate fuel planning, implementation of best practices, and advancements in operational energy processes. Since the program’s inception in 2022, participants have conserved over 6 million gallons of aviation fuel, totaling nearly $23 million in cost avoidance for the Department of Defense and earning over $11 million in monetary incentives. Once fully implemented across the Mobility Air Forces (MAF) enterprise, MEEP is projected to save approximately $80 million annually through cost avoidance. We wish this year’s squadrons the best of luck as they embark on the 2024 competition!
