French global airport operator Groupe ADP has invested $20 million in US-based LanzaJet, an emerging international producer of sustainable aviation fuel, reports Tony Harrington for GreenAir News. The investment was made by ADP International, a subsidiary of the group, as part of a strategy to transform its airports into energy hubs able to provide electricity, SAF and low-carbon hydrogen. The investment follows LanzaJet’s recent activation of the Freedom Pines facility in Soperton, Georgia, the world’s first ethanol-to-fuel plant, capable of both SAF and renewable diesel production. Groupe ADP is the third company to invest in LanzaJet this year, after the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund and the world’s biggest low-cost airline, Texas-based Southwest Airlines. LanzaJet has global expansion ambitions, with plans to develop plants elsewhere in America, as well as in Europe and Asia. It is also a partner in a new SAF project planned for Queensland, Australia. #sustainableaviation #sustainableaviationfuel #sustainableairports https://lnkd.in/etsuuYWE

We are thrilled to share that our strategic partner, DG Fuels, has entered into a landmark partnership with Airbus to scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across the United States. Airbus, a global leader in aerospace, recognizes the immense potential of DG Fuels' unique production system which harnesses cellulosic waste products, like wood waste from logging, alongside #renewable energies. The outcome? A projected saving of approximately 1.5 million tons of CO2 emissions yearly from 2026, supporting the global shift towards #decarbonization. This alliance aligns perfectly with the U.S. government's #SAF Grand Challenge, focusing on ramping up domestic SAF production while significantly reducing lifecycle #GHGemissions. With an ambitious goal to produce 35 billion US gallons of SAF by 2050, collaborations like this are fundamental steps forward. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury's words resonate with our vision: "Sustainable aviation fuels play a crucial role in enabling aviation's decarbonisation roadmap." Our #EVx long-duration gravity energy storage system remains at the heart of this mission, supporting the production of green hydrogen and ensuring a #CleanEnergyFuture. As one of the largest long duration energy storage projects announced to date serving a critical and unmet market need for SAF to serve the airline industry. As DG Fuels anticipates the construction of their SAF facility in Louisiana, we are enthusiastic about this collaboration's potential to scale up and replicate across the U.S. and beyond. Let's continue to fuel the skies sustainably, with the help of #EnergyVault’s energy storage solutions that accelerate the transition to renewable energy. Senior Associate at Herbert Smith Freehills advising on energy projects driving economic development and the energy transition
A bumper week for a more sustainable aviation industry! 🌍 The first transatlantic flight powered by sustainable aviation fuels flew from London Heathrow to New York. 🌍 Vinson & Elkins advised Infinium on a project to develop a power-to-liquids eFuels facility in west Texas that will convert waste carbon dioxide and renewable hydrogen into sustainable aviation fuels. Some thoughts looking forward to 2024: 🌍 Hopefully the meeting of minds at COP28 will give additional momentum towards a wider adoption of sustainable fuels. 🌍 Earlier this year, the European Parliament adopted the EU Sustainable Aviation Fuel Mandate requiring that 2% of all aviation fuel used in the EU are sustainable by 2025 (increasing to 6% in 2030). 🌍 Colossal investment in sustainable aviation fuel supply will be required to meet these targets, and challenges are likely both in developing and financing these projects at pace, as well as in supply chain and infrastructure capacity both for European producers and non-European importers. We're excited to continue working with producers, developers and investors across the sustainable fuels value chain to help the aviation industry meet its sustainability goals https://lnkd.in/g4sE4rAD

Is the aviation industry doing enough to decarbonise, or are we just scratching the surface? The recent trials on using renewable diesel for heavy and specialised airside vehicles at Changi Airport mark a significant step towards decarbonising Singapore's aviation sector. I believe this initiative highlights a proactive approach to reducing carbon emissions and adopting sustainable practices in aviation. Renewable diesel, which can lower lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional fossil diesel, offers a promising solution for greener airport operations. From my understanding, these trials aim to showcase a commitment to sustainability and pave the way for the broader adoption of cleaner energy sources in aviation. The collaboration between Changi Airport, aircraft manufacturers, and industrial firms to explore biofuels like hydrogen underscores a comprehensive strategy towards sustainable aviation.

With the aviation industry contributing significantly to global carbon emissions, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) are emerging as a promising solution. These innovative fuels can be used without modifying existing aircraft and have the potential to drastically reduce emissions in the short-term. Despite being in its early stages, #SAF production is on the rise. According to Canary Media Inc. in 2022 alone, around 80 million gallons of SAF were produced globally, tripling the output from 2021. Companies such as World Energy, LLC, Neste, Alder Renewables, SkyNRG, LanzaJet, and Fulcrum BioEnergy, Inc., etc., are leading the charge in SAF production, addressing challenges related to availability and scalability. Strategic brand and marketing leader with a remarkable track record of creating compelling narratives to drive international B2B and B2C business and brand growth.
I've been reading a lot of opinions and comments about whether people should still travel by plane with strong voices against flying due to pollution. In my years of studying trends and human behaviour, people don't and won't change overnight. The invention of flight was one of the most amazing innovation of the 20th century. People have gotten used to flying and getting to their destination faster. So aside from not flying at all, the fastest way to reduce emissions from flying is to use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Today, the European Parliament adopted a deal to set binding targets for airlines in Europe to increase their use of sustainable aviation fuels. This means that fuel suppliers have to make sure that 2% of fuel made available at EU airports is SAF in 2025, rising to 6% in 2030, 20% in 2035 and gradually to 70% in 2050. At Neste, we welcome and celebrate this ambition! #sustainableaviationfuel #europeanparliament #changemakers https://lnkd.in/dSTE8YPc
