Starting this Monday off with a look back at the energizing fly-in last week, made possible in part through the John McComb Memorial Fund. Huge thanks to the folks who made it out here for such an impactful slate of meetings!

The Biden administration just released a final regulation for the management of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska that will strengthen protections for 13 million acres of Special Areas in America’s Arctic and set the stage for even more protections. The Western Arctic is our nation’s largest single unit of public land, spanning nearly 23 million acres. To better protect these lands over time, five designated Special Areas were created — a collection of lands that contain critical ecosystems unlike anywhere else on earth, that serve as havens of global climate action and local resiliency. America’s Arctic contains some of the best intact ecosystems left in the U.S. Nowhere else on the continent can we find such unique biodiversity on such large swaths of undeveloped land. This place has long deserved the highest level of protection. From polar bears to snowy owls, our distinct Arctic wildlife depends on it. There is an incredibly strong appetite among millions of Americans to protect America’s Arctic and through that passion, we will find durable solutions to ensure this wild landscape is around for generations to come. Moving forward, there can be #NoMoreWillows in this landscape – which is why we’re incredibly thankful that the Biden administration has strengthened protections for Special Areas and taken the next step to ensure America’s Arctic receives lasting, durable protections. Remembering Senator Joe Lieberman today, who passed away earlier this week. Throughout his time in the U.S. Senate, Senator Lieberman was a tireless champion and vocal advocate for protections of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. As we honor his memory, we are continuing to carry on the work to protect the Arctic Refuge, and we remain grateful for his leadership. 31 years in, and we’re still fighting! March is the League’s anniversary month, and it’s prompting us to look back on some of the milestone victories we’ve accomplished throughout that time. From cancelled leases in the Arctic Refuge to the massive “Shell No” campaign that was years in the making, we’ve had a lot to celebrate over the years.
