In an industry known for powering the world, the energy sector is still struggling to fully empower a diverse workforce. The latest edition of “Untapped Reserves”, a collaboration between BCG and WPC Energy, reveals that while global energy companies emphasize DEI, progress remains sluggish. Amidst some signs of improvement, persistent challenges loom and critical DEI initiatives often lack consistent implementation. Since our last report was issued in 2021, the energy sector has undergone significant changes, including disruptions from the pandemic, energy security concerns arising from the war in Ukraine, and an accelerated push for sustainability and renewable energy. This refreshed report is a timely compass. Its recommendations don’t just encourage diversity, but lay the path to bolster business resilience and innovation in an industry facing transformative change. Today, we are presenting InCommodities' annual report for 2023 to the world. Although the energy markets in 2023 were in sharp contrast to the previous year, 2023 marked a period of growth for our organization, both in terms of people, skills and global presence. I am very proud of this year’s efforts from the world’s best team. They truly made a difference throughout 2023 and are responsible for another great year for our young company. Here are five key takeaways from my point of view: ✔ Despite a relatively quiet year in the energy markets, we are still experiencing growth. ✔ We are increasingly becoming a global company with expansions in the US as well as the Asia-Pacific region. ✔ We invested in technology and launched new products, laying the groundwork for the coming years. ✔ We are fully committed to supporting net zero; in 2023, we focused on the transition towards green energy and the global path to net zero. ✔ We succeeded in achieving our most important target: creating a valued workplace where our colleagues thrive. With an engagement score among our people at 9.3 out of 10, our team members are satisfied; this is particularly noteworthy in a year where our headcount grew by 45 percent! Diversity remains a challenge in the U.S. energy industry, including in the clean energy sector. Despite challenges, efforts like CAPS are working to build a more diverse clean energy pipeline and drive the energy transition forward while building out a more equitable workforce – including engagement with utilities and streamlining skills transfer pathways. Learn how the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) is addressing the lack of diversity in the clean energy sector by launching an outreach effort to include more women- and minority-owned firms in its network.

Both the oil & gas execs and their investors, are clearly up for the challenge to transition their businesses to low carbon and renewable, according to this survey. What is interesting here is the low rate of return on renewable investment, half that of oil & gas. That is why we need these giant$ to push the envelope - they did it before, they can do it again. “The majority (75%) of both surveyed executives and investors express confidence in the industry's capacity to balance its economics stewardship and environmental responsibility. This unified high level of confidence underscores the notion that continuing a shareholder-centric approach and aligning on energy transition goals can help O&G companies assume a leading role in the transition toward a low-carbon world.” Stopping oil stops renewables.
