This month, let's take a minute to raise awareness and improve our understanding of orofacial clefts -- cleft lip and cleft palate. Each year, about 2,600 babies in the U.S. are born with a cleft palate and 4,400 with cleft lip. These conditions can cause impairment in these babies' ability to feed, language development, and hearing, as well as ear infections and problems with their teeth. While there is no surefire way for pregnant women to prevent cleft lip or palate in their preborn child, they can reduce risk by making healthy lifestyle choices, taking folic acid, and being aware of side effects of medication before & during pregnancy. The Mater Research Study has highlighted the importance of reducing sedentary time in pregnant women. Interestingly, the study noted that even if a pregnant woman was very physically active (eg exercised regularly), the (in)action of sitting for long periods of time could impact the health of their placenta - and possibly their baby. The good news for mums-to-be who may already be challenged by discomfort and fatigue, especially in later stage of pregnancy, is that you can micro-dose your movement. Changing positions, standing up regularly, mini-walks, gentle relaxation exercises all add up! “these findings show that taking regular breaks to get up and move around the office or home are necessary to ensure a well-functioning placenta.” Link in comments. EARLS would like to use today's International Women's Day to point out that Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is definitely a women's disease. Women are about twice as likely to be affected as men. The causes are complex and not yet fully understood. The higher risk also seems to depend on how many times a woman has been pregnant. The risk of developing RLS doubles after one pregnancy, triples after two pregnancies and increases by a factor of 3.5 after three or more pregnancies. RLS is also a particular problem during pregnancy. About one in five pregnant women suffer from restless legs syndrome. During pregnancy, RLS symptoms are often more pronounced and cause considerable distress, which can affect the course of the pregnancy. The good news for women with RLS: You are not alone!!! There are ways to get back to peaceful nights and restful sleep.
