Board Certified Personal Injury Attorney | Texas Super Lawyer 2003-2018 | Founder at Van Wey Law PLLC
As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, we at Van Wey, Metzler & Williams reflect on the profound emotional impact lifelong injuries can have on individuals and families. It's crucial to acknowledge not only the physical challenges but also the mental health struggles that can arise from medical malpractice. In 2003, the Texas Legislature placed caps on the damages that patients can receive for the grief, anguish, and suffering caused by medical malpractice. This law significantly limits the compensation Texas patients can receive, regardless of the extent of their suffering. We believe this cap is unfair to Texas patients, who deserve full recognition and restitution for the hardships they endure. It’s time to reassess these limitations and advocate for laws that fully acknowledge and address the mental and emotional toll of medical injuries. Tomorrow is International Self Care Day, but we think every day should be self-care day. As a community of victim-survivors, lived experienced advocates, loved ones or professional support people it is important to practice self-care. The research shows us that self-care helps to mitigate the impacts of trauma, vicarious trauma and burnout but it can be tricky to prioritise. Find out more about information about self-care and coping with trauma at fullstop.org.au.

To my colleagues in academia and children's behavioral health: what was the most important journal article related to child trauma/children's behavioral health you read that was published in 2023? Was there a paper that wowed you, surprised you, challenged common assumptions, answered a longstanding question, had important clinical implications, gave you a new perspective? Especially if it was empirically strong! Monica Fitzgerald and I will summarize our top paper picks at the annual Chadwick Center Child Maltreatment conference in late January and I want to be sure we don't miss anything important! Share your favorite paper (and why!) in the comments.
