Did you know that 40% of physicians are reluctant to seek medical care for a mental health condition? On a similar note, nurses suffer from similar fears of losing their license to practice or losing employment if they seek mental health care. While there has been considerable emphasis on improving the well-being of clinicians, there is much to be done to alleviate the stress and burnout experienced by the entire healthcare workforce. In this episode of This Clinical Life, Stephen Beeson, MD and Corey Feist from the Dr. Lorna Breen Heroes' Foundation explore the importance of fostering a work environment where everyone in healthcare feels safe when asking for help. "We envision a world where seeking and obtaining mental health treatment is viewed as a sign of strength. The first thing we all need to be doing is what we’re doing right now, which is just talk about these issues, talk about the challenges, and talk about the solutions because we know that those will have a tremendous impact on supporting the healthcare workforce." - J. Being a curious, caring friend will increase your consultation conversion rate🔎 Here’s why… If your friend needed someone to listen, you’d ask what’s wrong and listen intently. But… what if they struggled to express their issues? You’d gently probe until they opened up. Now, apply that approach to your patients. They have problems that you need to understand. Like your untalkative friend, they need you to ask the right questions to express how their problem affects their life. Start by asking, “How is this problem negatively impacting your life? Can you list all the ways?” This helps you listen, take mental notes, and find the best path forward✅ Providers often assume patients will share everything, leading to incomplete solutions❌ Show care and curiosity—it’s the best conversion tactic. #PatientCare
