Important work by WORLD FORUM OFFSHORE WIND (WFO). As the #whitepaper rightly highlights, agreement on dynamic export cable standards, development of innovative wet connector technology, and adoption of a #holisticengineering approach to #floatingwind designs that integrates topside and stationkeeping with cables are going to be fundamental to the sector as it moves into full-on commercialization.

This is a report worth reading from WORLD FORUM OFFSHORE WIND (WFO), which considers the challenges and risks posed to dynamic cables for floating offshore wind. The very high cost of claims when problems have arisen on fixed offshore wind installations shows that these risks need to be considered and designed out or mitigated to ensure floating wind remains an attractive commercial proposition. We carried out a piece of work last year considering some of the future testing and qualification requirements of dynamic cables and the recommendations in CIGRE TB-862. It's clear that robust modelling, design and testing is as important as ever. Industry collaboration in agreeing standards, load cases, connector technology and testing procedures (and the required equipment) will help ensure these challenges can be met in the most effective way. #renewables #windenergy #offshorewind #floatingoffshorewind #dynamiccables

The WORLD FORUM OFFSHORE WIND (WFO) has just published its White Paper on Floating Wind Dynamic Cables: Overview of Design and Risks. It is the result of over a year’s worth of monthly discussions between participating #WFO members during meetings and interviews of WFO’s Floating Offshore Wind Committee (#FOWC) on the topic of dynamic cables for floating offshore wind. The report introduces the major floating wind cable specifications and their risks & mitigation measures, highlighting the importance of a holistic engineering approach that considers the impacts of the mooring system and maintenance solution on dynamic cable design. Moorsure/AMOG's Hayden Marcollo, is the Chair of the Cables & Floating Offshore Substations Subcommittee; “The newly released white paper represents valuable contributions from the whole committee as well as guest presenters to provide insights into the state-of-the-art thinking and future needs.
