😯 It is hard to believe that it has been a year since the last Floating Offshore Wind conference in Aberdeen! The UK government has set ambitious targets of 50GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030, including 5GW from floating wind. Despite floating wind representing 75% of the UK’s total offshore wind potential, the country has only commissioned 80 MW floating wind capacity to date. Further, the Scotwind projects awarded in 2022, which should be leading the contribution to the UK targets, continue to be stalled by uncertainties related to grid connection and path to market. Putting the failed Allocation Round 5 (AR5) in the rearview mirror, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s AR6 awarded Contracts for Differences equating to 5.3 GW of offshore wind, including the 400 MW Green Volt, which will be amongst the first commercial-scale floating wind projects in the world. While work remains to get the market back on track, Green Volt could be a turning point, priming the supply chain to prepare for the delivery of the GW of Scotwind, TOG and Celtic Sea projects that have the potential to help the UK become an industrial powerhouse in floating wind! Great news for Italy-Norway collaboration ❗ Renexia selects Aker Solutions for Mediterranean's largest floating offshore wind farm 🎊   Renexia Spa, through its subsidiary Renext Solutions, has signed a front-end engineering and design contract (FEED) with our member Aker Solutions to design the underwater substations for Med Wind, the most significant floating wind farm project in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Trapani. Aker Solutions will work in close cooperation with its alliance partner ABB. Saverio Ventrelli, leader of the Working Group for Italy in Norwegian Offshore Wind, comments: -Med Wind, with an expected capacity of almost 3GW, will probably be one of the largest floating wind projects and could be one of the first +1GW projects installed in the world. The latest news about the FER II decree underscores the attractiveness both in scale and scope of the Italian offshore wind market. The agreement involves the design of eight modules, two for each section of the Med Wind park, to be laid on the seabed of the Strait of Sicily, at a depth of between 520 and 660 metres, into which the cables of the plant's floating turbines will be conveyed. -The main takeaways from this existing news are twofold. Firstly, it shows that innovative Norwegian solutions are competitive with the state-of-the-art solutions globally. It is a good example for other Norwegian companies to follow. Secondly, it shows that full scale demonstrations are crucial for market introductions. Offshore wind energy in the United States is experiencing a slower start than anticipated. Despite numerous projects in the works since the mid-2010s, with expected operational dates in the early 2020s, we're yet to see a major wind farm become operational. In an exploration by Colebrook Offshore, we delve into the factors causing these delays. Take the MarWin project by US Wind, for instance. Launched in June 2017 off Maryland's coast, MarWin aimed to be operational by 2021. Gippsland offshore wind partners get feasibility license Gippsland Skies Offshore Wind, a consortium comprising Mainstream Renewable Power, Reventus Power, AGL Energy and DIRECT Infrastructure, has secured a feasibility license for the 2.5-GW offshore wind project in the Gippsland region of Victoria, southeast Australia. Subject to approvals and consultations, detailed studies and offshore and onshore environmental surveys should follow over the next few years. Once feasibility has been proven, the consortium can apply for a commercial license, allowing development to proceed. The project’s first phase could be operational in 2032. Five further offshore wind projects in Victoria also gained feasibility licenses: High Sea Wind, Blue Mackerel North, Kut-Wut Brataualung, Ørsted Offshore Australia 1 (Gippsland 01), and Star of the South Wind Farm.

The New York governor announced on Thursday that Equinor’s Empire Wind 1, an 810-MW wind farm located 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island, and Ørsted’s 924-MW Sunrise Wind, located 30 miles east of Montauk Point, will be offered new contracts following the state’s 2023 Offshore Wind Solicitation. Olsen Seawind and Hafslund.” “”Ørsted have informed us that due to a #prioritisation of #investments in the #portfolio they will withdraw from pursuing participation in #offshorewind developments in Norway, and therefore their participation in the partnership will discontinue,” said Norway’s Bonheur in a statement.” “Fred. Olsen Seawind, formerly called Fred. Olsen Renewables and Hafslund formed the consortium, named Blaavinge, with Ørsted in June 2021 to take part in #offshorewindtenders in Norway.” “Hafslund and Fred.
