My opinion on the term "Pilot Shortage" - A 135 Aviation Recruiter's Perspective... 👩💻 I’m going to express an unpopular viewpoint: there is no "PILOT" shortage. This issue has been miscommunicated since 2020, leading many to believe the industry lacked "pilots" causing a large amount of people (of all ages) to rush off to get their pilot certificate. (Please see attached link to FAA data to back up my statement.) There was and is a “QUALIFIED pilot shortage,” which is lightening up a bit since early this year. Qualified pilots typically have the required amount of hours/qualifications and, for 135 operations, are usually type-rated. In 2022, I couldn't hire a type-rated pilot with enough hours, to save my life; this year, we have a sufficient amount of type-rated (qualified) applicants. There are many contributing factors to the “qualified pilot shortage” but that’s a different post. Every time I talk to a low-time pilot who tells me they got into flying because they were led to believe there was a “pilot shortage,” I cringe. I receive 4 - 5 messages every week from low-time pilots who can't find jobs. They rushed into a career thinking there was a huge need for "pilots." Before you start typing away in the comments below, follow the attached link and click on “2023 Active Civil Airmen Statistics” under Annual Statistics. This link will give you the stats for the past 10 years. https://lnkd.in/gXcHeAfn Statistically, the FAA’s reporting shows an increasing number of pilot certificates issued from 2014 to 2023 with the overall pilot certificates (minus students) holding steady. This doesn’t mean you won’t find a job, it means you need to search harder, be creative, network, be willing to move. Someday this period in your career will be a distant memory when you have multiple offers to review, but…for now…you might have to do more to stand out. NETWORK... ✈ Go to pilot job fairs ✈ Apply for aerial survey or safety pilot positions ✈ Take non-crew jobs in aviation to get your foot-in-the-door and make connections ✈ Instruct ✈ Do volunteer work (Angel Flight; Challenge Air; Wings of Hope and many more) If you would truly like to consider a career that has had “shortages” for over three (3) decades, become a Certified Public Accountant! I’ve hired for that sector as well…much tougher than hiring pilots. 🤣
