The 9th #ourocean2024 Conference has been an important opportunity to introduce the network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and environmental Change, MedECC. Here is a short presentation. The MedECC assessment supports the science-policy interface on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean. The process to develop the next Mediterranean assessment report (MAR2) will start this Fall, 2024 and will be undertaken in the coming 3 years or so. Building on expert and stakeholder advice and needs, we will assess 🔸 new advances in science, 🔸 the vulnerabilities to climate change and environmental impacts, 🔸 the many opportunities to reduce risks to the affected communities and ecosystems, 🔸 actions that build long term resilience. We aim to inform the implementation of solutions that are consistent with achieving sustainable development and strengthen the link between securing a healthy environment and wellbeing in the Mediterranean. I would like to invite you to find out more, and also directly participate in undertaking the MAR2! contact@medecc.org www.medecc.org/ #OurOceanGreece

MENA Oceans hosted the 2nd regional maritime stakeholder consultation last week, supporting the 'Navigating the Future of Shipping programme' developed by the High-Level Climate Champions Team, United Nations Foundation, The Sustainable Shipping Initiative and Equal Routes. Building on the momentum from our MENA Oceans Summit sectoral deep dive, and facilitated by Katharine Palmer; this session brought together diverse stakeholders including ports, researchers, bunkering and fuel companies, banks, and youth. The session aimed to gather regional input into the first draft of the '2030 Marine Biodiversity and Ocean Health' Maritime Breakthrough Goal and Roadmap, to be shared at COP29 Azerbaijan, with the final version to be ready by the UN Ocean Conference 2025 in Nice. Discussions brought forth the following inputs: 🎯 Advocating for ambitious yet achievable milestones that engage all value chain stakeholders 🌱 Integrating existing tools like Ecologically and Biologically Significant Areas (EBSAs) and Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSAAs) 🔬 Boosting data collection in under-researched areas; proposing ship-based live animal sighting reports. 🌍 Categorising milestones into minimisation, restoration, and offsetting actions 🏙️ Considering both offshore and coastal waters, including new port and harbour developments 📊 Refining the roadmap's language to align with scientific terminology and frameworks To learn about the key takeaways from the MENA Oceans Summit sectoral deep dive download our Insights Paper on “Sustainable Maritime Decarbonisation for Healthy Oceans”: https://lnkd.in/eUMT2PXj For more information, reach out to us at menaoceans@goumbook.com. Being part of the "Let's Be Nice to the Ocean" initiative has a profound sense of alignment with my values. Ahead of the Third United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, the French and Costa Rican co-presidency has entrusted the Rémi Parmentier’s The Varda Group to co-facilitate the involvement of civil society, emphasizing the importance of civil society in shaping the conference agenda. The forthcoming UNOC holds critical importance for the 30x30 agenda, and as the deadline approaches, seizing this moment becomes imperative to fulfill our commitment: ensuring the comprehensive, high and full level of protection of 30% of our Ocean by 2030. Building upon the conversations initiated during the 2nd UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, the call now echoes for innovative ideas that transcend traditional approaches, encouraging us to challenge norms and contribute creative visions and proposals. The initiative's principles are encapsulated in a seminal paper—a guiding manifesto advocating for a shift towards making ocean protection the norm rather than the exception. With less than two years until the conference, "Let’s Be Nice to the Ocean" serves as a stark reminder of the urgency to act as responsible stewards of our blue planet. Aligned with the pressing need for economic decarbonization and addressing climate mitigation and marine biodiversity crisis, the initiative resonates as a critical force for change. As stakeholders, enthusiasts, and advocates, we play a pivotal role in this journey. Since the initiative's release last November, the platform remains open for us to share our visions and proposals. The transformative opportunity presented by the Nice conference is too significant to overlook. Let's collectively contribute to #BeNiceToTheOcean. 💙🌍 Discover more about the initiative and be part of our call : https://lnkd.in/ebhZpGB3 🌊✨ #UNOceanConference #UNOC2025 #30x30 #OceanConservation #MarineProtection #SDGs #UNOceanDecade

‘CONSERVE COASTAL AND MARINE AREAS’ 🚀Raising awareness of the state of the marine environment and of the existing commitments, as well as measures that can be taken to improve the state of the oceans, is an important step towards improving implementation. 🚀Increasing our knowledge of the oceans is one key action in that regard. Marine scientific research, as well as the exchange of information and data, can help build our knowledge of the oceans and seas and inform policymaking. ✏️Over 8 billion people depend on marine and coastal resources as a means of support. In addition, oceans play a crucial role in the achievement of global food security, as well as human health and well-being. ✏️ They are the primary regulator of the global climate, function as an important sink for greenhouse gases, serve as the host for huge reservoirs of biodiversity and play a major role in producing the oxygen we breathe. MAKE SDGS A REALITY 🌍 ‘Sara Nadira’

The strategic goal of the EU Horizons 2020-funded ArcticHubs program is to develop sustainable, solution-oriented tools for reconciling competing models of livelihood and land-use in Arctic hubs and their surroundings, whilst respecting the needs and cultures of local populations (eg Sámi in Fennoscandia). The project anticipates that such actions will help facilitate the economic development of Arctic hubs that will limit detrimental impacts to ecosystem services (such as air & water purity, wood and non-wood products), and ameliorate the coexistence of new industries with existing industries and livelihoods. Tomorrow, ArcticHubs members will be hosting the webinar "Environmental impacts and Arctic Hubs: drivers, pressures, and interaction." This webinar introduces and discusses the changes in the Arctic environment. There will be an assessment of differences and similarities between the Arctic hubs with regards to their environmental impact and the consequences for the sustainable development of economic activities, including tourism. For those who are living, working, and/or are interested in the Arctic are very welcome to join this engaging webinar and can register here to participate: https://lnkd.in/eQanF_BP #arctic #arcticcircle #sustainabledevelopment #environmentalimpact #sustainableeconomy #indigenouspeoples #internationalcooperation #internationalcollaboration Sarah Cox Ann-Kristine Vinka Cody Groat catherine bell David Schimpky Mathieu Dormaels Rebecca Jansen Christophe Rivet Leanna Wigboldus Irene Fogarty Cecilie Smith-Christensen Inga Hlin Palsdottir Pernilla Nordström Anna-Karin Ferm Christer Gustafsson Marianne Lehtimäki Anniina Sandberg Margaret Gowen Larsen Mogens A.
