#UNGA2023 (September 2023, NY) was such a wonderful chance to listen to and engage in a variety of conversations linked to SDG4 progress, nonformal and informal education, financing challenges, inequalities, pedagogies, private sector and non state roles and the global public good, the future of employability, gender equality, multistakeholder and multisectoral partnerships, climate change, technology in education, and the SDGs at large. We do work on such a breadth of topics at the GEM Report! Besides the buzz of the event, the variety of venues and side events, and the broad call to recommit to the SDGs, it was heartening to hear at least some concrete interventions and engagements, especially by young leaders. Still, I primarily leave with a reminder of the sobering reality - we need to do better. Thank you for all the exchanges, and see you next time! 🌍 Eliminating Gender Disparities in Education 🌍 During the first trimester of my MSc, I had the incredible opportunity to delve into Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4.5, focusing on eliminating gender disparities in education. Under the guidance of our lecturer Frances MacInnes, I embarked on a journey of discovery and storytelling that truly enlightened me. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), established by the United Nations, aim to address global challenges and achieve a better and more sustainable future for all by 2030. They cover a broad range of issues including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. Before this course, I had little knowledge of the SDGs. However, the MSkills course, led by Frances, highlighted their importance and the power of storytelling in conveying their significance. We were challenged to create a digital story for our chosen SDG, which became a transformative experience for me. For my assignment, I focused on an aspect of SDG 4.5 which aims to eliminate gender disparity and ensure equal access to all levels of education. This goal is pivotal in achieving gender equality and empowering women and girls. The project not only deepened my understanding of global educational disparities but also enhanced my research and storytelling skills. Today we celebrate International #WomenInScience Day with the goal of inspiring and engaging others, and improving gender equality in the scientific environment. We support #WomenInSTEM: here in the EU, considerable resources are invested in fostering gender-equal working environments, as part of the European Commission’s #GenderEquality Strategy 2020-2025. 👩🔬 Inspired by the incredible legacy of Marie Skłodowska-Curie herself, the EU-funded #MarieSkłodowskaCurieActions programme for example funds #WomenAndGirls in STEM in Europe and beyond.  The programme places strong emphasis on promoting gender, equal opportunities and a supportive environment for fellows and projects, in line with the principles of the European Charter for Researchers. 🔬 MSCA grants also allow for part-time work and parental leave. Under Horizon Europe, nearly 45% of all MSCA fellows are women, and they are more successful than men when applying for MSCA #PostdoctoralFellowships. 𝗥𝗠𝗜𝗧 𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗵 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 We are proud to announce that RMIT continues its #sustainability leadership, ranking in the top five global institutions in this year’s 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗧𝗛𝗘) 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 for impact against the sustainable development goals (#SDGs). RMIT University remains first in the world for Reducing Inequalities (SDG10). The University also achieved strong improvements in two other areas including Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), up 13 places, and Gender Equality (SDG 5), up 18 places. Climate Action (SDG 13) also improved to 16 in the world. "This achievement belongs to our staff, students and partners who bring transformative education and impactful research to life every day.
