Humans are rather poor at recognizing when their mental state may not be too good at making key decisions. Now research by a team led by Prof. Daniel Forger at the University of Michigan underpins the development of a new wearable-based app called ‘Social Ribbons’. It will warn when it may be inopportune to be undertaking key tasks while at work. We already know that lack of sleep can lead to poor decision-making (see https://lnkd.in/g6_P5XY). However the researchers added another variable, the phasing of individual body clocks. 2,500 first-year resident physicians were tracked over 2 years using Fitbit wearables that recorded when they were awake and, using some unique algorithms, derived their Circadian rhythm patterns. Each subject noted their mood daily. The cohort was an ideal population - first year residency is known for its long and irregular hours on duty and the stressful and unexpected situations that are confronted. As the charts indicate, both the number of wake hours AND Circadian phases influence mood. As found in earlier research, the longer awake, the greater the impact on mood and concomitant ability to make rational decisions. But, additionally, mood swings become greater the longer the awake period. In such cases, knowing where you are in the Circadian rhythm becomes a key factor in the ability to perform at work. Quoting Dr. Forger, "People are not very good at assessing what the state of their biological clock is, and they're actually not so good at assessing how well they've slept, and that's why all these wearables are providing a lot more information to people." The research is reported in the January 2024 volume of Digital Health https://bit.ly/3J3XapI . Smartwatches can do more than just track steps and sleep. A new study says they can also give important information about dep_ression symptoms to mental health doctors. A professor named Joshua Curtiss from Northeastern University in the US says this kind of technology is part of something called precision medicine. This means doctors can personalize treatments for each patient better. The study looked at data from patients at Massachusetts General Hospital who wore a special wristband called Empatica E3. This wristband tracked their sleep, movement, heart rate, and other things. Changes in sleep patterns, such as sleeping too much or too little, can indicate dep_ression, just like reduced physical activity and being socially isolated. All these signs can be seen using wearable technology like smartwatches and smartphones. For example, doctors can see how often patients use messaging apps to tell if they're talking to people or not. Curtiss says this data can give doctors more information they wouldn't normally have. But it's not meant to replace doctors' judgment. They still talk to patients and use their own knowledge to understand everything. If the data shows a patient isn't moving much, the doctor can talk to them about why and how they're feeling. The same goes for sleep patterns. Curtiss says it's common for patients to not tell the whole truth about how they're feeling, so this data can help fill in the gaps. #doctor #smartwatch #sleeping #data

Working with high-performing, desk-based women, I often see this common belief: many think that going hard at the gym twice a week can make up for 50+ HOURS of sitting at a desk... Don't get me wrong - gym is great, but it's only part of the solution for staying healthy. Prolonged sitting is associated with serious health issues; cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, back pain - and the list goes on... We are in the era of a sitting pandemic, so this message needs repeating: We need to move more THROUGHOUT the day—walking, stretching, or standing up regularly. Research shows sustained low-level activity is key. Aiming for 10,000 steps a day is good, but shooting for 15,000 is even better. Even if you go to the gym on weekends, long periods of inactivity during your work week can still take a toll on your body. Consistent low and moderate activity over time is where the real benefits are. If this resonates with you, try using an activity tracker (like a Fitbit or smartwatch) to help guide you toward incorporating more movement into your day. For a minute, forget the aesthetics and summer body BS — but rather think about being around your family for years to come!

Up until mid-last year, I didn’t pay enough attention to my physical health. While I may not have achieved my ultimate goal yet, I am happy with the little progress I have been making. It's easy to say that we don’t have time, there's so much to be done, etc., but honestly, it’s all about prioritization. While exercising cannot assure you a long life like the length of the Ganges or the assurity to fit into a size you were many years ago, it sure does impact your overall well-being and mental health. I have never been fascinated by Apple products. But this birthday, when my husband got me an iPhone and an Apple Watch, I didn’t just upgrade my phone, I upgraded my health and well being as well. The way the Apple Watch gamifies the whole health journey is marvelous. It works like that old nagging aunt who coaxes you to achieve just a little more. - The goals- It coaxes you to achieve short-term goals and hence they seem doable, making you work towards them. Just like how having some achievable short-term goals in mind often helps you reach the success you wish for. - It gamifies the entire process.-The fact that you achieve medals and appreciations pushes you to do your best each day. "Hey, you smashed it today, now don’t stop!" “Wow, I sure wouldnt!” Is my immediate response! - It’s measurable- Everything is being tracked, and what's measured can be improved. Similarly, every task we want to accomplish should be measurable. The progress you see often pushes you to get it completed. - Shareable- You can share your health stats with your friends who own a watch too. Every progress your contact shares pushes you to do better as well! Your contact's positive responses when a goal is met make you feel so much better. I'm not endorsing pricey purchases, but using a smartwatch for the right reasons can boost your physical well-being. It’s not just about the physical benefits; the mental boost and sense of achievement are rewarding too. Find what works for you, stay committed, and celebrate the small victories! I know many of you may have a smartwatch already. The aim of this post is not to brag but to share my experiences and how it could benefit a few others like me!

Do you know that you have 2 ages? And actually your chronological age is less important? Your chronological age is, of course, how old you “know” you are based on your birthday. This is where I send all my clients for their bloodwork. Go to insidetracker.com Check their plans (the 2nd one is the one with biological age) Choose your state and “add to cart” On the next page click “proceed to checkout” before applying discount code This weekend use code: LEKSVUCKOPROSPECIAL for 20% off Complete checkout You also get a 1 year subscription to the platform which allows you to track your progress. Once you schedule your blood work at a lab, they will automatically upload to the system and you’ll have info on what more to eat to get better results. You can also connect to any wearable devices that track your wellbeing so that you can track your progress, fitness, sleep, stress along the way. Maybe you can’t “turn back time” but you can buy more time!! A Wellness Doctor | Providing personalized care to maximize your healthspan and daily well-being. Sharing advanced health content and useful knowledge bits along the way.
Health trackers track metrics like physical activity, sleep, heart rate, and mental health status, providing us with a wealth of data. But as I see with my patients, most people just use them for monitoring, not progress. That's just the first step. 📈 The real power lies in using this data to make progress. Here's how: 1. Choose a focus area 🗒 - Pick one lifestyle domain to concentrate on at a time. Maybe you want to eat healthier, get more active, or improve your sleep. 2. Set specific goals 🎯 - For example, "I am going to complete 150 minutes of cardio per week," or "I aim for 7 hours of sleep each night this week." 3. Leverage your devices ⏱ - Use your smartwatch or mHealth app to track progress. 4. Daily or weekly check-ins ✅ - Regularly assess your progress and adjust as needed. 5. Celebrate small wins 🌟 - Do this to stay motivated! 6. Level up ⬆ - Once you've mastered one area, tackle another or combine them. Let's make those numbers mean something. Take control of your health journey today. Associated article: 1. Vaghefi I, Tulu B. (2019). The Continued Use of Mobile Health Apps: Insights From a Longitudinal Study.
