🚀Pioneering sustainable technology, Aotearoa New Zealand’s #aerospace sector is growing faster than ever. Meet four #spacetech companies who are supercharging growth within the local aerospace industry with clean and sustainable innovations. Kea Aerospace is working with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) to integrate optical cameras and radar systems onboard their Atmos aircraft. Dawn Aerospace meanwhile are working on novel satellite propulsion technology that uses green propellants. Two great examples of New Zealand - German cooperation in the sector. The Pentagon’s FY2025 budget request for hypersonic research was $6.9 billion—up from $4.7 billion in the FY2023 request. The Pentagon has not provided a breakout of funding for hypersonic-related research in FY2024, but requested $11 billion for long-range fires—a category that includes hypersonic weapons. The Missile Defense Agency additionally requested $182.3 million for hypersonic defense in FY2025, down from its $190.6 million request in FY2024 and $225.5 million request in FY2023. At present, the United States Department of Defense (DOD) has not established any programs of record for hypersonic weapons, suggesting that it may not have approved either mission requirements for the systems or long-term funding plans. The German Federal Ministry of Defence | Bundesministerium der Verteidigung has submitted a request for 652 million euros ($697.18 million) to the parliament's budget committee to finance a hypersonic weapons development project with Norway. In mid-May, Norway's defence group KONGSBERG announced a partnership with Germany's Diehl Aviation and MBDA to develop a super-sonic missile known as 3SM Tyrfing. The HYPERMissile (TM) can reach Mach 25 and comes in 3 models. Further, HYPERMissile (TM) can be launched from air, land or sea and can be navigated using AI thereby optimizing precision targeting while delivering maximum payload. We will get to the root cause and come back for launch after fixing the cause: Agnikul Cosmos Chennai-based space start-up AgniKul Cosmos postponed the inaugural launch of its 3D-printed Agnibaan rocket due to a communication glitch in the onboard hardware, just 129 seconds before liftoff. This marked the third unsuccessful attempt since March 22. The Agnibaan Sub-Orbital Technology Demonstrator (SOrTeD) mission aims to showcase the semi-cryogenic engine Agnilet, powered by sub-cooled Liquid Oxygen and Aviation Turbine Fuel. Equipped with advanced features like ethernet-based avionics and carbon composite fins, Agnibaan can carry up to 300 kg payloads to a 700 km orbit. As missile technology advances Taiwan is keeping pace by developing supersonic anti-aircraft and anti-ship missile systems, such as the Sky Bow and Hsiung Feng. The Taiwan Armaments Bureau recently announced its “National Defense Advanced Technology Research Program” for 2025, which includes a breakthrough project proposed by the System Development Center of the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST). This project aims to develop heat-resistant protective materials and improve scramjet engine ignition and flame retention over three years to enhance propulsion efficiency. Last year, media reports indicated that the Air Force had initiated a project under the codename “Feiji No. 2,” with a budget of NT$13.5 billion (US$415 million), to develop and modify the “Yun Feng II” missile into the Ching Tien hypersonic cruise missile. This missile has reportedly entered mass production and is gradually being delivered to the Air Force Air Defense and Missile Command for deployment, marking the first time the military has possessed a strategic weapon with such a range. The recent scramjet engine research project proposed by NCSIST also clarified that the program is focused on advanced propulsion technology for hypersonic vehicles.
