Last week we convened our third VP3 Convening for members and invited guests to spend two days diving into the details of what is and isn't working in the #virtualpowerplant industry right now. The event featured presentations on RMI's recently published #VPP policy principles and upcoming resources on the decarbonization benefits of VPPs and VPP case studies around the US; candid conversations on utility pain points and opportunities for VPPs, what regulators need from VPPs right now, and how to go from liftoff to longevity; and interactive eLab-style breakout sessions full of insight-laden flip charts and sticky notes. After project managing three of these, I leave each event feeling more inspired by the benefits VPPs deliver to customers and the grid, more motivated to help dismantle the barriers VPPs face in order to unlock and achieve scale, and more heartened by the incredible knowledge and generosity of the people working in this space. VPPs are a key part of the energy transition's toolkit to help manage load growth, save customers and the grid money, provide reliable grid services, and mitigate emissions. VPPs are at an inflection point, and we have an opportunity to shape that trajectory—into one that maximizes equitable access to their benefits, for all. Onwards! ⚡️ • Shoutout to the best teammates I could ever ask for: Kevin Brehm Mary Tobin, EIT, WELL AP Lauren Shwisberg Mark Dyson Alex Walmsley Tyler Fitch Jubing (Icey) Ge 🤝

🌟 KTP project video update 🌟 I’m delighted to share an update on our KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) project with the brilliant team at the University of Glasgow. Over the past two years, we've been working on delivering NetZero for our estate. Our KTP associate, Dr Sonam Norbu, with guidance from Prof David Flynn and Dr Benoit Couraud, has led the creation of a dynamic sensor landscape across multiple buildings on our estate. This project generates real-time data that is starting to inform our team's decisions and enable us to test interventions in real-time. Together this approach is helping us reduce our carbon footprint and prepare for a local heat network. This project has been transformational in building our case for a heritage-led transition to NetZero, it has also helped foster a culture of innovation, evidence-based action and curiosity within The Crichton Trust team. The insights we've gained could significantly impact how we think about heating and cooling heritage sandstone buildings worldwide. If you want to know more - ask us! You can watch the video to learn more: https://lnkd.in/efAUDFP6 (Although maybe fast-forward through the bits I'm the others are much more interesting and informative, why does it never get easier to see/hear yourself on a recording?) Bravo Mr Gabe Klein and your team at the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation!! Those EV users without off-street parking at home or work only rely on urban public infrastructure to recharge. Kerb-side chargers mostly at residential areas is the way forward (potential to lowest charging costs and better integration with renewables and grids). The challenge, the number of points required. But there are ways to deal with it. Great Britain and Netherlands are also going on that direction. Hopefully many other countries soon too. Wish also #AFIR after its revision by 2026. Walk the Talk and Talk the Walk. It has been an honor to participate with ESIG (Energy Systems Integration Group) and their working group on grid planning for electrification. NACFE asks utilities and fleets to work together to plan the future. We walked that talk to participate in this group to "talk the electrification planning walk". Every week I'm learning more about the grid, and every week we look to share what NACFE is learning from fleets about the challenges and benefits in decarbonization. It won't happen fast, but together we can make the rollout smoother. Check out the report here: https://lnkd.in/gZAc7D8K #ESIG #gridplanning #bigchange

"That speed seems about right for a government program." Gabe Klein, Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, made a subtle but important point today at the SAFE Summit: government programs take time. When we work with private sector clients applying for government funding, there's often frustration at the timelines. Grant programs typically take a year from application date to when the award contract is finalized. DOE loans can take 12-18 months to get to conditional commitment. (This is federal--states can move a bit faster.) Why? Because of regulations and oversight. If government goes too quickly or gets sloppy, Congressional watchdogs, inspectors general, and/or the Government Accountability Office will start looking into what went wrong. This is a good thing! Our taxpayer-funded agencies are being held to high standards. This means they're responsible with funds and accountable to the taxpayers who foot the bills. Of course things do go wrong, but it's amazing how often they go right. So what should companies do when their need for speed doesn't match government's caution? 1. Apply earlier. This is the number one thing companies can do. Start pursuing government funding months before you start looking for private funding. 2. Speed up your application process. Form an internal working team that can quickly and nimbly pull together all the needed paperwork. Line up internal reviewers so they're ready to go. You can't control the government's timeline, but you're in control of a lot of the speed of an application. 3. Troubleshoot early. Don't get so far down the wrong path that it takes ages to back up and start over again. What other lessons have you learned?
