Reflections on Hard Work, Commitment, and Safety: This was the most iconic photo I took during my stay at the Borr Drilling Natt in Congo. It was captured during a particularly challenging operation, showcasing the pressure, hard work, teamwork, commitment, and perhaps a little bit of mud. Watching the team in action reminded me of a powerful insight from Professor Jordan Peterson: 'The purpose of life is finding the largest burden that you can bear and bearing it.' This quote resonates deeply as I observe the relentless effort and dedication poured into the Congolese crew members, who consistently take on and overcome significant challenges in their work. Hard work is more than just physical effort. It's the commitment to excellence, the willingness to push through challenges, and the determination to never settle for less than our best. That day, I saw firsthand how true professionals pridefully carry their burdens, meticulously attending to every detail. Not the least, safety is not just a box to check; it's a fundamental commitment to ourselves and each other. On May 1, Kagem Mining Limited (Kagem) took part in the joint Labour Day celebrations, held at the Lufwanyama Boarding School Hall, which brought together representatives from government, mining companies, trade unions, as well as others operating in Lufwanyama, demonstrating its solidarity with the broader labour community across the district. At the occasion, Kagem welcomed the government’s call to bolster productivity in the workplace through continuous improvement and upskilling of staff to create an increasingly capable workforce. The Lufwanyama’s District Commissioner, Mr. Justin Mwalikwa, said, “In an effort to have a skilled labour force that responds to the needs of the industry, government has continued to engage skills training institutions, as well as support young people to acquire relevant skills. I encourage all the young people in the district to take advantage of grants under CDF and others to pursue skills training from trades training institutes and colleges.” Kagem recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) to support the training of the mine’s staff in industry-specific skills such as mechanics, electrics, applied sciences, business studies and automotive and heavy equipment repair. The mine also conducts regular internal training sessions throughout its departments. The 2024 Labour Day theme ‘Building Resilience: Workers at the heart of Zambia’s Economic Recovery’ brings to the fore the importance and need for a skilled and engaged workforce if the country is to effectively implement and achieve its economic growth goals within the projected and desired timeframes. Three young men were hired as technicians by a mining company in Ghana in 2007. I know one of them. It was their first regular employment following months of contract gigs here and there. They all started with dreams and ambitions to get as far as they could in the mining industry. Four years after they started, one of them, John, resigned. He joined another mine as a technician. He worked hard, exhibited great work ethics and continued the weekend studies he had started from the previous company. He took charge of his career development, he got a mentor and chose the conversations he sat in. It paid off. He rose through the ranks and became a Superintendent four years after joining. After seven years in the company, he joined another company, then another and another, all for growth. Early this year John started a new role as the Head of Engineering for a mining firm in Ghana. Now listen to something very interesting. On his first day at work, John bumped into two technicians. Guess who they were? The same people he had started with in 2007. They’re still technicians. As he wondered “what happened to the dreams and ambitions?”, they complained: “We’ve not been lucky. No one sent us for training nor promoted us, both here and in our former place” Your own dreams. Your own ambitions. You left them in someone else’s hands? In his book “Can’t Hurt Me”, David Goggins says something that I love. Let me me share; “Lady Luck did not suddenly show up, run me a hot soapy bath, and kiss me like she loved me. ….I got to work” Have a great week.
