May is Foster Care Awareness Month, a time to open our hearts and minds to the experiences of over 400,000 foster children across the nation. These children, often moving from home to home, frequently carry more than just the physical burden of their belongings in nondescript and undignified trash bags—they carry the emotional and psychological weight of uncertainty, loss, and upheaval. Foster children are disproportionately affected by challenges such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. They may struggle academically and socially, often as a direct result of their unstable environments and the trauma they’ve endured. Each transition can feel like yet another layer of instability in their already tumultuous lives. This is why #MyBagMyStory was founded, a compassionate nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that no child has to pack their life into a trash bag. With every stylish, durable bag sold, another is donated to a foster child. These bags are not just practical; they are symbols of respect, care, and the belief that these children deserve better. We can all play a part in supporting these resilient young individuals. 🌟 May is National Foster Care Awareness Month! 🌟 For the past two years, my family has been on an incredible journey of fostering and I’m proud to share our story during this important month of awareness. National Foster Care Awareness Month is a vital reminder of the often heartbreaking challenges faced by children and youth in foster care. It's a time to recognize the need for loving, stable homes and to honor the incredible individuals and organizations working tirelessly to support them. As foster parents, we've experienced firsthand the highs and lows of providing a safe haven for children in need. Each victory and every profound moment of connection underscores the resilience of the human spirit. But our journey is just one of many. That's why this month is not only about raising awareness but also about inspiring action. You don't have to foster to make a difference. You can be present. Share your time. Grab groceries. Offer respite. Donate to an org. Mow a lawn. Wash clothes. Hold babies, hold hands, and hold space for all the feelings. Bring tissues to the courthouse. Invite the family over for a swim. We exist to see every child in a loving and stable home. Houston’s overwhelmed foster care system is a massive problem, but it’s not the only problem to solve in pursuit of this goal. Holistic problems must be addressed holistically. And because none of us can do it all on our own, we have to work together- as a community fiercely committed to strengthening children and families. Some of us foster children. Some of us mentor youth. Some of us pour into at-risk parents. Some of us become a certified babysitter able to offer time to foster parents. Some of us give financially to support initiatives and education. When ALL of us build a home among the suffering, that's when we see deep, restorative change. Did you know? The Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas holds 65,000 people. Multiply this by six and you get 390,000, which falls short of accommodating the 400,000 kids in foster care today. Nationwide, there are only half the amount of homes needed to house them. One of the reasons for the shortage is that 50% of new foster parents quit within the first year, with many stating lack of community support as a reason. We recognize the complex emotions involved in foster care. While we are thankful for the safety and care we can provide, we also acknowledge and feel the pain and loss experienced by the children and their families. This dual perspective helps us approach our work with empathy and compassion. Our primary mission is to ensure the safety and well-being of children in foster care. Each day, we are grateful for the opportunity to provide a secure and nurturing environment where children can begin to heal and thrive. The relief that comes from knowing these children are protected from immediate harm is immense. We see firsthand the positive impact of stability, consistent care, and the loving attention our staff offers. This sense of security is a cornerstone of their journey toward a brighter future. However, the reality of foster care is not without its heartaches. Every child who comes to us has a story of loss and trauma. They have been separated from their families, siblings, and the only life they knew. This separation is often accompanied by feelings of confusion, abandonment, and grief. The families, too, are enduring their own anguish, grappling with the circumstances that led to their child's removal. We see the pain in the children's eyes and hear it in their voices, and our hearts ache for them. Navigating these dual emotions requires a delicate balance. We strive to create an environment where children feel safe and loved, while also honoring their past and the feelings that come with it. This means celebrating their progress and milestones, but also making space for their sadness, anger, and fear. It means understanding that a child can be both relieved to be safe and heartbroken over their separation from their family. Foster Care is complicated.
