A new exciting project has dropped at ATF! Beach House Pictures has teamed up with Anh Teu Studio to produce the film adaptation of Vũ Trọng Phụng’s 1936 novel Dumb Luck, highly regarded as the most popular novel of 20th century Vietnam. Set in 1930s Vietnam, this film follows the implausible and hilarious adventures of Red-Haired Xuân, an unscrupulous vagrant, as he rises from poverty to the top of society and becomes revered as the poster child of the country's Europeanization movement. If it's been more than ten years since you were in an academic setting where you had to read critical analysis on the topic of your study, and you've recently come across an essay that takes you warmly back to those days of lab work or class discussion of an artistic text, this one's for you. Bonus points if you've seen this film, have been trying to get a friend to watch it, or it's your first time and spoilers are not bothersome. Pauline Chen on Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine" (1993): "Farewell My Concubine continues this examination of the tension between tradition and modernity, but on a more lavish and ambitious scale, facilitated by international funding and Chen’s collaboration with Hong Kong artists (notably source-novel author Lilian Lee and actor Leslie Cheung), made possible by Deng Xiaoping’s liberal reforms and openness to the outside world. The film tells the story of Douzi (as an adult called Cheng Dieyi and played by Cheung), left at a Beijing-opera school by his mother, who can no longer raise him at the brothel where she works. The timid, sensitive boy befriends a brawnier schoolmate, Shitou (as an adult called Duan Xiaolou and played by Zhang Fengyi). The Wings of Songs (2021) is a movie that attempts to portray an idealized version of life in #Xinjiang, a region marked by severe human rights abuses against #Uyghur Muslims. The production companies involved in its production were 1. Department of Culture and Tourism of Xinjiang, 2. Propaganda Department of CPC Committee of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and 3. 🤲 New work - Empty sounds 🤲 We recently worked with Seoul based studio TDL on their recent film. This 4 min piece explores different, otherworldly spaces and the negative space that occupies them. Sometimes the lack of sound can be most impactful. The power of negative space and silence in our work cannot be overstated. It plays a crucial role in sound design to add emphasis and impact to the narrative. 📹 Contrast and Focus: Strategic use of silence offers a stark contrast to sound, making subsequent noises or dialogue more impactful and drawing attention to the visuals and subtle details.

What is left when everyone leaves, and what remains? Keita marries drama and thriller so as to show the dark face of a Dakar left alone, abandoned by its promising sons and daughters: a Dakar underground, surviving on easy money, where individuals themselves are abandoned as families disinte- grate through exiles and absences. William Nadylam’s crude, unsentimental, and even harsh performance in the role of Adama holds the film altogether. Keita himself has acknowl- edged a certain chaos in the scenario (see his interview with Olivier Barlet, “L’Absence: Une Métaphore de l’Etat de l’Afrique,” May 2009, www.africultures. com), explaining that the shooting conditions had been so difficult and constraining that he thought this would be his last film. L’Absence was shot in five weeks with a low budget. It is only after many, though award-filled, years that the film has made its way to cinemas in 2014. (It was selected for the Rotterdam Festival and received the Best Screenplay Award at Fespaco 2009.) In the film’s tragic critique of postcolonialism one might find echoes of Cheikh Amidou Kane’s novel L’Aventure Ambigüe (1961), in which a young man returns from a promising exile at university in Paris only to find himself feeling suicidally lost and alienated at home. Such a comparison, however, risks reducing Adama’s impossible return to a situation of cultural incom- patibility. There is much more than that here. Adama is never accused of being either too assimilated or decultured. Instead, the film hints at the violence of his departure—with the moral violence of his absence mirrored and replaced by the physical violence now pulsing through Dakar. The question is not simply whether one can return after exile, but what does leaving mean? The film presents absence through its moral and social implications, and exposes its inherent contradictions, opposing the irresistible attraction of an international, “extroverted” success (see Jean-François Bayart’s The Politics of the Belly [Polity, 2009]) with a continent that has been left orphaned. I am Yury Teplyakov, a filmmaker, screenwriter and producer who escaped from Putin's Russia with my son, because because of my opposition activities and denunciation of the criminal annexation of Crimea by FSB officers in 2014, I miraculously escaped arrest and had to hide for more than 7 years. Our evacuation, which was prepared by many people and our friends from around the world for a year and a half, is a separate story about which I will also make the film "Two Tickets" but later and perhaps also with your help. Now we are living in France and we started blogging about our daily life on YouTube and I invite you to our UTOPIST channel so that you can better get to know me and my son Vladimir, and I'm trying to finish my debut feature film in the genre of crime drama "The Green Lamp", which I managed to shoot in 2011, but which got stuck at the post-production stage due to the fact that I lost the opportunity to finish it in Russia. I wrote the script, gathered more than 100 people, we developed the project, prepared everything necessary and shot all the necessary material for a 90-minute film in 42 shooting days over the course of a year. Especially for my film, the famous composer Artyom Vasiliev, who worked on major film projects in Russia and the world, wrote music. We have re-voiced all the actors in the studio. We do computer graphics and I tell you about all the stages of working on the film on our UTOPIST YouTube channel. While already in France, my friends helped me make subtitles in French and English so that after the film was completed, I could participate in international film festivals and film distribution. But nevertheless, there is still important work to be done on sound, graphics and color correction, and for this I need your help. To complete the film in Russia, I needed about 30,000 euros, but now, while in France, I will try to finish the film much cheaper. So, for example, to do all the necessary work on sound - voice dubbing, sound design, noise design, mixing and mastering in 5.1 quality, I need only €3,000 and I already have a sound engineer. And I hope that I will also need no more than €5,000 for color correction. Therefore, I plan to finish the film completely if I can raise about €10,000 in total. I will publish various materials of the film and ask you to ask me questions so that I can explain everything to you. And if you think that my film "The Green Lamp" is worthy of being seen by the world, then I ask for your help in the form of reposts and, if possible, in the form of money that I can spend on completing the film. My son and I have money for life and development, you can see in our blog that everything is fine in our lives. But I am a director who has a lot of interesting projects in his plans, but first you need to finish the first one and get a reputation. The indie film world lost a giant figure in Roger Corman, and I heard lots of news stories about that, well-deserved. But we also lost another incredible figure of the indie world, perhaps less widely recognized, in the last few days, Mark Daman. He may not be as well-known a name, and I heard no non-trade news stories about his passing, but his value to the indie world is inestimable. He essentially created the foreign pre-sales model for financing films, initially (I believe) with PSO--Producer Sales Organization. In a world where my formerly beloved studios are largely making crazy expensive comic book films and toys-come-to-life "IP" movies, his model still supports the development and production of great films. (I put "IP" in quotes because all films are based on material protected by IP rights, but the term seems to be used now mainly for well known comic characters, games, toys, ie non-literary "IP". No offense intended to my friends in that business.) RIP to another giant of the indie film world!
