In just about every body image story the one question we ask our clients. When was the first time you remember being uncomfortable in your body? What we can tell you is in each and every story was the disapproval of their body by the medical community, family, friends, bullies, etc... What we are telling you is, anyone who criticizes your child's body (including yourself) isn't helping. We promise the harm will take years and years to undo and heal (and sometimes it's longer than you can imagine). If you are a caregiver, parent or medical provider and you are struggling with how your child's body (or those you work with) is showing up in the world, please seek out a fat positive dietitian or therapist. At Beyond our providers are trained to work with caregivers and medical professionals to challenge your own anti fat bias. #Antifatbias #fatpositivedietitian #Medicalcommunity #Medicalprovider #Medicalprofessionals #bodyimagestory #bodypositive #parents #eatingdisordersupport #haesdietitian #haestherapy #newtownpa

Some really great discussion generated by my human rights scenario. Thanks everyone. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next week when I post another one 😀. Let me know what you think of my take on this. While I agree that at first glance it may seem appropriate not to intervene, there does need to be evidence that an attempt has been made to mitigate risk. Because he's in care there is some responsibility for staff. Positive risk taking doesn't mean throwing away our duty to care. However the first person to be consulted with is the gentleman, not his wife (Consent and presumption of capacity).Just because he has dementia doesn't mean he can't make decisions. If he's in agreement then his wife is brought into the conversation. Assessment always the first port of call. Does he understand his diabetes. Is he even affected by it ?. How's his BSL ?. Doesn't need to be tightly controlled. Staff need to be knowledgeable of the conditions their residents have. If he's unable to participate in makings the decision despite all supports then chat with her to see if she understands that he has diabetes....maybe she doesnt know. Regardless, his quality of life is paramount. If he understands the risks he has the right to enjoy his treats. If BSL affected discuss low sugar alternatives. His choice. Main point here is that no decisions are made for him without first involving him in as much as is possible and any intervention is the least restrictive. Is it lawful legitimate necessary and proportionate.
