At our recent BVRC International Volunteer Forum 2023, themed 'Making a difference through empowering others,' our panelists, including Kate Bellamy, Coordinator of Volunteer Services at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and President of the Burwood Cricket Club, shared insights on enabling a diverse community to volunteer.
Kate highlighted the positive impact of having females in executive roles on the Cricket Club committee, leading to the creation of innovative programs not previously considered in what has traditionally been a male-dominated sport.
Kate also offered practical tips for fostering diversity within organisations:
1️⃣ Embrace a new perspective: Start viewing things from a different lens, both as individuals and organisations, to attract a more diverse volunteer base.
2️⃣ When inviting volunteers to join committees, start with smaller tasks, such as participating in a subcommittee, to make the commitment less overwhelming.
3️⃣ Develop an Inclusion and Diversity Action Plan outlining the vision for diversity within your organisation. Establish short, medium, and long-term goals, incorporating quick and easy wins to build momentum and attract others to what you are doing.
Let's continue making a positive impact in our communities through enabling our diversity community to volunteer! Do you have any tips to share?
