Today marks the start of VINCI Energies and Actemium UK's Safety Week. Each year we focus on a particular theme to consider, reflect upon and share our thoughts to encourage improvement in a particular area.
This year's theme is saying "STOP", but what exactly does that mean, and what do we want to achieve by encouraging it?
Those that know me know of my military background, and in the services there is a common saying that originates from 19th century strategist Helmuth von Moltke - "No plan ever survives first contact" i.e no matter what best laid plans you have in place, it is likely that some unforseen event or variable will arise that requires a pause to reflect and rethink your strategy, often half way through your plan.
This is, unfortunately, as true in my current employment as it was my old. It highlights the importance of taking pauses to reflect on whether everything going on around us is as planned, expected and if not, recognising that and taking the steps to ensure we are working safely. Having a culture that all Actemium employees, from the highest Director to our newest apprentice, can feel empowered, supported & confident to say "STOP" & reflect when they are unsure of any aspect of their works is vital.
By adopting this approach, we ensure that we are protecting ourselves and our colleagues to our utmost ability, no matter what we encounter, which is ultimately what is most important.
I look forward to spending the week travelling the country and seeing you all at local Business Unit events.
Stay Safe.
