I recently came across an inspiring article from the MIT Technology Review titled 35 innovators under 35. 🌟 Among these innovators is Sharon Li, recognized as the Innovator of the Year for her pioneering research in AI safety. Her work aims to prevent catastrophic failures in AI models when faced with unfamiliar scenarios, which aligns with our commitment to safety at TotalEnergies. 🌍 Another innovator, Young Suk Jo, co-founder of Amogy, is addressing climate and energy challenges by engineering solutions to decarbonize the transportation sector. His startup focuses on using ammonia, a common fertilizer ingredient, as a fuel for trucks and ships, offering higher energy density compared to compressed hydrogen. This resonates with our mission to create a sustainable energy future. 🤖 In the field of robotics, Lerrel Pinto is working to improve the functionality and usability of home robots by incorporating learning mechanisms that enhance their performance over time. This innovation is a testament to the potential of technology to transform our everyday lives. The journey of PhovIR began in 2023 when Tim Echtermeyer, a prominent figure in the Microelectronics and Nanostructures Research Group at the University of Manchester, founded the company. Leveraging his expertise, PhovIR focuses on developing cutting-edge technology for NIR optical sensors that can be seamlessly integrated into handheld devices. The University of Manchester Innovation Factory website highlights PhovIR's proprietary MEMS technology, which enables spectral analysis in various fields including healthcare monitoring, agriculture, food safety, environmental monitoring, and hazardous material detection. One of the key features of PhovIR's offerings is its analytical software that provides real-time analysis capabilities. While specific details about the sensor technology remain undisclosed on the website, Echtermeyer's involvement in research on graphene-silicon-on-insulator Schottky diodes for near-infrared photodetectors hints at the innovative approach taken by PhovIR in sensor development. SO WHEN DID THIS TECHNOLOGICAL AGE BEGIN? Most of us speak of this as being a hundred or so years ago….but……   While it's challenging to determine a definitive "first technology," the wheel and controlled use of fire are among the earliest and most transformative technologies that shaped the course of human civilization. These innovations marked important steps in the development of tools and technologies that have continued to evolve over time. Wheel: The wheel is often regarded as one of the most important inventions in the history of technology. Its invention is thought to have occurred around 3500 BCE in Mesopotamia. Control of Fire: The controlled use of fire is another crucial technological milestone. The mastery of fire likely dates back to the early stages of human evolution. Early humans discovered how to control and use fire for various purposes, including warmth, protection, and cooking. The ability to cook food had significant implications for human nutrition and energy, contributing to the development of larger brains! Great article on the challenges for PhD or postdoc-led startups (especially in climate materials, but broadly applicable), as well as some of the fantastic accelerators that have emerged to help them grow (Activate, Breakthrough Energy , Greentown Labs). Great to see featured one of Columbia Engineering's most promising new startups, Standard Potential Co.. Launched out of Professor Dan Steingart's lab by Andrew Wang and Richard May, Standard Potential focuses on next generation sodium-ion battery technology, and is part of Activate's latest cohort. Solving one of health cares greatest challenges, which we increasingly learned from SARS, COVID is a myriad of airborne pathogens that threaten hospitals, ambulances, doctors offices, public transportation and more with contagion and illness or worse. We bathed in hand sanitizer and scrubbed every surface and box with disinfectant- remember? Conventional technology to destroy airborne pathogens requires electricity to power MANY corded devices: UV Lights, Hepa Filters etc. Today in Detroit Bernard Bourgeois from the Michigan Israel Business Accelerator (MIBA) and I heard from researcher Moshe Meyassed about the material science breakthrough of LumaFlo - Breathe Brightly using nanomaterials to create ribbon like flex materials that attract and kill pathogens at a medically important rate. No wires or electricity. No ozone creation. Just a healthier air quality produced by a static device that does all the destructive work energized by ambient photons. Early stage commercialization opens the opportunity to join these entrepreneurs in a life saving quest. I'm intrigued.
