Birdi & Partners ’s Post

As the then trustee of the Grade I listed Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery designed by Sir John Soane, I was responsible for leading the procurement of the Pitzhanger Lodge in Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) that recently won a RIBA London award designed by Joanne Townshend . Some tips on procuring a beautifully designed small project . 1 - Select an Architect that is able to undertake as many of the lead design services as possible. You never need a cast of many and the Architect is always best placed to lead and coordinate a project of this scale. Jo was Architect, Lead designer, Project manager, Planning consultant ,Contract administrator and Principle Designer. It worked like clockwork . 2 - If you want the structure to be expressive and be able to tell its own story, pick an engineer that see's their practice as making art. Steve Webb of Webb Yates Engineers practices this way . 3 -To reduce carbon in the building, first reduce it in its fabric . We decided to make the entire structure without steel or concrete and instead from timber. 4-Omit as much of the needles technology as possible ...it will go out of date and only ever goes wrong. Buildings don't need to be over complicated, instead allow them to be easily adapted. 5- Finally, pick individuals whether they are the designers or contractors that you know that when you a hit a problem and you will, that there is a culture to work together and to proactively find a solution. https://lnkd.in/eSWk65vd
