The theme for NDEAM 2023 is “Advancing Access and Equity: Then, Now, and Next,” which honors the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the first federal legislation to prohibit discrimination and address access and equity for people with disabilities. While there is debate over where and when the first original Disability Pride Month event was organized and convened, more Americans have began observing Disability Pride Month during the month of July each calendar year. I am glad I took the Get Disability Confident grow your understanding of disability course which has expanded my understanding on the 3-dimensional concepts of disability.While disability is one of many characteristics that make up a person’s identity. The course was able to allow me explore how I can ensure support that is tailored to truly meet a person’s specific, unique needs. I came to the realization that when we refer to inclusion, we are referring to the measure of culture that ensures diversity can thrive. Without an inclusive culture, diversity cannot thrive and diverse employee retention will be greatly reduced. While we learn to accept others with their unique differences, intersectionality needs to be understood also because we will consider how an individual can inhabit multiple identities that intersect within different systems of oppression, and importantly, how they overlap and are compounded. I recommend this interesting course for everyone, so we can have a more accommodative workspace.
